Reported as GFF by CoC at 10:00am on the Day with GStick 9.2 Stands & Centre, 9.0 Far Side.GFF late Sat after 5mm Watering on Fri. Some Rain overnight? Stiff to Strong WSW Wind = Half Tailwind from the Right. Stands Side course. Stalls Stands' Side. === Pre Race === Latest Work Video for Academy House from Arpil 29th shows him doing doing a slower paced wotk in a pair with the unraced 2yo Golden Hello. Both of the pair looking medium ones and strongly built. AH going more comfortably and looking professional and the right side of listening to the Rider for instructions and letting that overcome his urge to go quicker. GH perhaps a bit bulkier but looking less together physically and a bit green. Uphill work without a kick at the finish. AH looking a ready medium sprinter by the sire and 75+ but any better? Previous work video a similar set-up from April 19th with AH in a pair with Modest on the same uphill finish strip. Modest's pedigree stronger than his 28,000gns price would suggest. By Kyllachy out of Coy (6f 2yo & Listed 8f 3yo) although the dam has only produced 2 x minor winners. Modest again perhaps a bit bulkier than AH but struggling to keep up with him and AH's rider again able to just do a static 'perch' with AH going along smoothly and professionally. Check how professional he looks in in a 13 runner field over undulations. Also check his relative size for reference. Jaadu's latest Work Video a bit 'busy' and not easy to read. 5 x 2yos in the Gallop led by older Fitzwilly. The limited smaller one That'll Happen (poor 3rd FTO at BATH) & unraced Lunar Son in front rank with the Lead Horse. 3 x 2yos in behind including Jaadu and would presume these are the better 3 in the Gallop and set the task of settling in behind the lead and two lesser 2yos and then progress later in the gallop. Jaadu achieving this comfortably and joining up with Stargazer late on to go clear. Enthusiasm tempered by he is just going past the smaller & limited That'll Happen and not looking much bigger. Tigerwolf follows Jaadu through and gets a bit blocked by him and Tigerwolf goes at least as well. Other 2yo is Lunar Sun, a grey, who ends up last of the 5 2yos and looking more of a galloper needing further. Before that Jaadu's last video in a trio with a lead plus 2 other 2yos. One of those the small Rockliffe who was well besten FTo at PFCT earlier in the week. Jaadu going better and finishing with the lead horse but, again, he's only beating Rockliffe. Zebstar Lot 3 at Brightwells Breeze Sale, the first of the year, and the 2nd Breeze Graduate to run this season. Following First Selection who was Lot 1 and won FTO at SWEL. £37k at the higher end of sales prices. In the Breeze Video not a grey but a medium or smaller medium on, Compact body and deep enough. Looks like a 5f type in shape. Shows a faster than average action and moves straight in Centre track. Tiring in the last 0.5f, Looking 70+ usable and uncomplicated but nothing looking 'much better' than that. ==== Post Race === A Slow Overall TIme on a Day with very Fast Conditions and the 1,000gns run in just 0.53secs outside the Track Record. Worth noting the CoC had tried to stop the 2,000 Guineas field splitting into Groups by putting a False Rail out from the Stands Rail until 2f out. This did not work in the 2,000 Gunies as Hughes had stated before the race. His view being that if you have 10 runners the field wont split if there ar 20 they will. The Rail Out still leaving a wide expanse. But, also leaving a cutaway at 2f+ out whrere the Rail 'disappears'. Visually looked a Slow mid Race with Jk Hughes on Wedge drawn wide away from the Stands Rail but breaking smartly and crossing over to the rail (XF) then Settling the Pace and Stacking the Field behind. Sectional Times per 1f = 1st 1f = 14.15secs 2nd 2f = 11.77s 3rd 3rd = 11.84s 4th 1f = 10.87s 5th 1f = 12.24s . @rowleyfileTF Sectional Time debrief made this race seem tremendously slow and Suspect Form favouring Prominent runners. On a notably fast conditions day the Finishing Speed %age at 104.1 (slow pace) and the Sectional Rating for the winner 39 (poor seller form level). On first View of the Video Jaadu running out wide and moving well mid race but getting tired int he last 1f. Looked a better type In Context (IC) of the leaders. Academy House making most ground of the 'Closers' having been 3R on the Rail when the 2f kick started. Note that the Race Video shows the 5f covered by 1 x Camera from the Stands === Post VRev === A race with a mixed Quality history and not as strong as its 'Premier Maiden' position and billing might suggest. 2012 edition notably 'empty' for the race, 2013 much better with the winner a later Group vicotr and a Listed winning filly behind but mixed up with season maidens. 2014 had a 7f Group winner in 2nd but soon tailed off into disappointers, sub-75ers & worse. Also a race where the expectation can put some 'Rose Tinteds' on the PRev/VRev because this lot must-be-good, right? Not always and PRev should be judging the horses without the NMKT Guineas Day context although that can be hard to do. The 2014 edition saw a spectacular bit of poor work with Barchan written up as a real good one. He won a Nursery off OR63 then a handicap on the AW over the winter which has got him up to an unwarranted OR80. AW winter season being a soft Test as a whole. Always something new to learn. Writing up this Edition not helped by what has to be classed as a very slow pace. Add in some unfit ones, some greenery, not handling the undulations (divot showers int he bottoms of the Dip), and some 'Tomorrow Riding' or 'Educational Intros' and a very messy race and the abilities might well be mixed up. Looking back at the 2013-14 editions you could say that the two later Group winners did show something a bit 'different' in winning and a photon finish 2nd. A key question with this Group is whether anything hinted at better. The Top Level take being that they were a solid bunch of 75+ and better in the first 7 home but anything much better than into OR80s handicappers? Zebstar the second Breeze Sale graduate of the year to run and both have won FTO. Zebstar Lot 3 in the first Breeze Sale of the year and the other winner was Lot 1 (where did Lot 2 go?). The Pre-Race Breeze Video review above said he looked a usable, uncomplicated sprinter and trainer Kelleway has had 1 month to refine that since the sale. In PRev Zebstar looking a hard fit smaller-medium sprinter. Good condition and the readiest for the day in the field. Ran a touch free in the race and was left with the job of wearing Dheban down in a 2f sprint to win (a job he would not have been 25/1 for if you had known the race would pan out as it did). Showed a willing attitude but did not show anything different. A ready NOW one getting the better of a messy race. Say around an OR80 one and a real 5f sprinter. Lacking some size and scope against the bigger and less ready ones in this field. Dheban an unusually positively ridden debut for a Dettori ridden Hannon FTO for the Jk's Qatar retainer. A lot of that seemed to be circumstance in that Dheban got trapped in the Leading Line without trying because of the slow pace. Dettori did refrain from hauling him back several lengths to sit near the back though. Which counts as 'positively ridden' for Dettori (and getting involved in an all-out Pace War for Frank). Dheban bigger, lengthier and less fit than Zebstar. Producing a similar effort to lead until lack of full fitness saw him headed by Zebstar. Should have more scope than that one and a less obvious 'Little Bull' ready sprint. Say 85. Academy House the first runner of the year for trainer Bell. In 2012/13 his 2nd runner of the year was unplaced in this race with both going on to be Maiden winners and rated 80+. Both have proved to be 80s older handicappers with Kimberella going up a level when David Nicholls finally got him. Nicholls has done the same with other older horses bought from Bell. Which makes you think about the point in the 2014 Trainer Review article about Bell being stuck in a rut of being 'fine' with his record with 2yos but never pushing on to a higher level. Is the fact that Nicholls can squeeze at least 8-10lbs more out of Bell's older handicappers saying something about his training regime? Given that preamble, and the fact that AH looked an uncomplicated type in the Work Videos, then no surprise that AH looks like 'semper eadem' Bell has picked a similar type to start in this race. Look at the VP picture and a smaller medium sprinter ok 5f type. A bit bigger and a bit more length than Zebstar for example. Given a non-involving ride and getting shuffled back on the rail. Used the Cutaway to get a clearer path near to the rail in the last 2f. Making a similar effort to the leaders and still 7th in the 'heap' not differentiating itself off the Slow Pace. Jk used the whip at that poitn and AH responding and still going forward at the same speed to the line to get to 3rd and closing still on the leading pair. You look at AH and Zebstar and ponder over what the result would have been if you had swapped their preps over. AH being the Breeze grad with Kelleway and vice versa. Easy to believe AH would have won this with that set-up. AH another OR80+ type starting in the race for Bell. Worth noting the other 2yos he was with in the work Videos. Modest is a filly (correction) and is entered for the ASCT maiden on Friday. The other was Golden Hello. The Hills' stable - Barry now Charlie - often used to start high class 2yos at the NMKT Craven meeting (Kiyoshi in 2013 the last eg). No runners there in 2015 and a later start in late April with a couple of ok types at WDSR. Sahreej standing out as the Biggest in the PRev and his bulkiness showing up in the race. Try looking at the Video in the 4th 1f as Sahreej is behind the grey pair of Wedge & Dheban. Sahreej a bit shorter than Dheban but bulkier and both bigger than the Hughes ridden Wedge. Jk Hanagan typically non-involving with Sahreej held back when free and just HnH in the final 2f and crossed by the winner at one point and slightly blocked. Appeals as a possible Better Type in this group and 90+? Trainer Appleby has toned down Godolphin preps for debut and Carrington the first mildly competent one. But still a bit green and making a slow start etc. Notably ran too free overall. Ok effort in the last 2f given all that. Like Zebstar and AH a shorter sprint type and looks the strongest of those 3 and a bit more quality (hard to define, neater made?). After the Barchan Debacle in 2014 a bit wary but should have more scope than Zebstar/AH and 85+. Jaadu looking one of Channon's better 2yos in the Work Videos so far although not worked hard and difficult to judge the context. Ran better than the result here (BTR) after getting a bump from Zebstar at the start and ending up last. Then ran a bit too free to make that ground back wide out from the rail. Got himself to 3rd at 1f out before hanging right and fading. Looked a strong front and good mover in VRev. Looking at his VP picture he might be a bit Front Heavy and just IP body length. The type Channon will campaign in Listed/Group races, you would expect. Looks ok for at least 85 and Channon may get his or over 85. Ok type to follow. Age Of Empire the Hannon 3rd string and Owner Bred with Dobbs riding. Effectively ridden like a 3rd string and given an 'Educ Intro' ride and non involving. Ok HnH effort int he last 2f and seemed to be staying on well last 0.5f like 6f ok. Looks a likeable physical type in his VP picture although not fit and looking green and 'daft'. Starting to hop about a bit because he is finding this all a bit exciting but clueless about what is going to happen and lacking any nous. Looks anoother ok for 85 and should be better with development. Ok to follow. Wedge ridden by Hughes and the Jk able to get to the lead from a wide draw and control the race. Even given that advantage only 4th at 1f out and then an early fade in context. Hanging a bit and a touch unbalanced at times in the last 2f. Even taking that into account it seemed he was beaten by stronger types. Hughes riding because Wedge readier type than AOE? Wedge not looking as strong as many of them in his VP picture. One of 3 Zebedees and a touch bigger than Zebstar but not the same compact 5f ball. Much smaller than Shareej. Or 70s. The Littmoden pair looking out of place physically in this group. E Fourteen running a bit free and then getting unbalanced last 2f. 60? Pacifica more prominent than EF but getting more unbalanced and looking a suspect mover. Perhaps a bit over 60. But neither of much interest given Littmoden's record. Belle Mare Plage a filly with a strongish female side pedigree and her 60k price presumably including a bit for that. Looking the least ready physically and mentally here. Solid trainer who does not target 2yo racing at all. Has not had a winner in 2013-14 from 27 individual runners and his 4 x winners since 2010 have been 3 expensive ones for Qatar owners and an expensively retained Breeze Sale one. What is the plan with BMP? Presumably it is to get a win to make her a more valuable broodmare or why start her so early. Smaller type but not small and ok 60+. Check how the development goes. |
