Going Soft by Race Time with further heavy showers on the day. GSS after rain during the previous day. CoC reports = "The rail for the second day of the Boodles May Festival has been moved out by 3 yards between the 6f and 1f point. ". Things then go flaky when he (Andrew Morris, no Twitter handle) when he lists how much extra distance this will mean for each race. 5 of the 7 races say either an extra 13 or 14yds. You might ask why the 1yd difference but perhaps a rounding factor. The 12f race, the longest on the day, is an extra 20yds. Which makes some sense because the race covers part of the Railed Out section twice. This 5f 16yd race distance (i.e. the normal advertised distance) is supposed to be an extra 26yds which is nonsense. Looking at the race distance he gives - 5f 26yd - assume an extra 10yds. === Pre Race === Falcon Annie likeable and mostly positive in her Yearling Video. Relaxed and sensible attitude. Medium or smaller medium, deep bodied and good muscle and scope. Balanced walker if a bit straight in front. Hip a touch narrow but looks a strong sprinter, uncomplicated attitude and ought to move ok. Fahey in his SLife piece = "Young John ran okay at Chelmsford first time and has his second start in the Maiden Stakes. Five furlongs around here might be sharp enough for him but he’ll be coming home strongly.". === 1st View === Terrible Stuff. Someone should get hold of the Jks on the first 5 through Halfway, make them watch this Video and then question them about Pace Jugement, Saving Ground, Efficient Run Styles etc. Laughable to Watch. No doubt there will be a bit of "what a genius Hanagan" is for winning on Young John. When he was actually just LUCKY so many of his rivals killed their own chances. Young John 6L back at Halfway, unable to go the Pace and driven along. With the ludicrous PACE WAR up front on Soft going the Race FELL APART and set up for a Closer. Grisly. A Line of 4 Pace War from early on with from the rail out - High Speed, Mustnt Grumble, Falcon Annie & Raj To Riches. Gawd knows what Raj To Riches has done to deserve the ride he got. Having run too freely twice and caught near the line on his first two goes his Jk forced him onto the Outside of a Lo4 Pace War covering miles further. His final position and Rating dont reflect it but RTR probably ran a blinder and gave it everything. [Update = See the WTRB text at the bottom. Ok, that makes it alright then? It wasn't the Jk's fault it was all RTR's. This horse should develop a persecution Complex. They really ARE all out to get you.] As the Halfway positions to Final Placings show this set up as a Closer's Race with the field well on the way to turning themselves Inside Out by the line. The first three home all ran the Rail with High Speed hassled by a Wall of Pressers (they made some great albums) outside her, Rogues' Gallery about 2L back at Halfway but chasing the pace. Young John well back an finding a clear run up the rail to travel the shortest distance on any in the race as well. YJ looking chunky but a smaller one and perhaps around 70. Won an extended 5f here in testing conditions and a slow time. Presumably needs further as Fahey said and hard to see what else he can win if he gets something like OR79-80 for winning a Class 3 maiden. More of the same for Fahey who won the 2014 edition with a horse who was driven along throughout and won by beating faders late on. But that winner the size to be ok 80+. === Post VRev === On watching the race fully for each horse the first reaction is that the Ratings given might be too high. A very inefficient Race and the winner slower than all but one of the field when efforts made in the first 3f. Leave [Est] level as is because they are inside the horse 'Class Levels'. Interesting race in the sense that it a a good example of the 'Minor Chaos' factors which are part of Horse Racing and make it the good betting medium it is. Predictable to a good level but the intrinsic Chaos of Draws, Pace, Going, Bends, etc means that you can identify the 'Best Horse' and it wont win on a solid number of occasions. Young John smaller and chunky and looks quite strong. But, uses little range in front and looks a stodgy mover. Looking outpaced compared to most in the first 3f with, for one example, Rogue's Gallery alongside him after 0.5f and racing wide. RG set off to close up on the pressing leaders before halfway. RG 4L clear of YJ at that point and the Jk slightly holding him back with YJ being driven along for the whole race. For another example the small filly Lydia's Place got a slow start from a wide and adrift of YJ after 0.5f but made ground back to him by Halfway. YJ never really producing an extra effort/kick in the last 2F and just low level plugging on down the rail. Can improve for nous but seems to lack athleticism to use his power efficiently. You would expect him to look slow if he gets caught up in a faster ground 6f race. Not one to follow (although always a niggle with a trainer as good as Fahey). Although his comments on YJ before his first 2 runs did not suggest he was expecting much = but why 2/1f here? Rouges' Gallery still in good condition and a complete trier. Slow start with a bump and had to make a notable effort to get to 2R on the rail behind the Lo4. Ok effort in the last 2f given that but fading lack to be re-passed by YJ whom he had left behind in the first 1f. RG looking ok for 71-74 range and less power than YJ but moves better. High Speed a smallish and compact one but strongly built. Stronger than FAnnie for example who is a similar basic type. Ran a bit Stop/Start, free early then settling but that pace Lull just inviting a Wall of 3 Pressers to join here and stir things up again. RUnning the rail assisted her effort to go clear of the others into the last 2f but stalling and fading and having gone too hard on the going worn down by the Closers. The type that doesn't appeal to B2yoR on Size grounds and that will limit her going above Maiden level. But, seems a solid ready type and ok basic pace so can probably win an average Open Maiden, perhaps fillies' only in faster conditions than here. Addicted To Luck finishing a staying on 4th feels like confirmation that the abilities were mixed up at the finish and the Form Level low. ATL coming from the widest stall and 5 wide early on and hauled back to drop to the rail and, as often happens, that slowing down and across at the wrong time with the rest of the field pressing on. Which meant ATL always driven along and chasing. Getting to 4th by some mild plugging down the rail (shortest way again a constant theme). A small one and probably with a fitness edge given Evans trained. Say 50s of some sort. Falcon Annie looking a usable 75 Maiden Type in her 1yo Video. Similar size and type to HS but a bit less strongly made. Ok for 70+ sprinter. Jk Kingscote riding who, while basically a better Jk than Frank overall, has the opposite illness to Spencer. Kingscote likes to get 2yos to the front, or at least prominent, and control or contribute to the pacemaking. But, he hasn't known when to Back Down and use Plan B so far in 2015 (having returned early season from a long injury lay-off). The 4 x competent debuts for Dascombe this year have been 1st, 3rd (twice & both within 0.5L) and 4th (at 2L) through Halway on debut. With FAnnie's 3rd 3 of those four have faded notably to end up in the 5th-7th range by the line. Whoa!! there Richard, never mind the horse. Falcon Annie at lest showing the pace to get to be 2 wide in the pressing Lo4 but sent on a Suicide Mission by Kingscote. Imagine what might of been if she had been sttled back to race on the rail 1L in front of YJ. Seems an ok debut in context of the Race Shape and leave the ok 75 tag. Raj To Riches too fizzy in the prelims in his first two races and reportedly worse here. Has run well both previous times and ran a Blinder here given he was forced to race 3 wide in a Lo4 and that after having had to chase 3L back having got a bump at the start (also bumpred by FAnnie after 1f). A very good effort to be able to raise an effort at 2f out to get to 3rd before the inevitable fade. Around 70 early and lacking scope and will end up 60s but set an impossible task here. Take him to downhill CHEP on fast ground againt a moderate field, Why Dont You. Oh, and it seems ridiculous to suggest a horse that got as strongly involved as RTR did and found a 2f out kick was "unsuited to the Soft going". Mustn't Grumble ok tall in this group but a bit narrow. Able to get 2nd 1 off the rail but some driving and niggling through the race. Unbalanced towards 2f out and found only a short low level response after. Low 60s? 8th/9th both small fillies of little interest. Lydia's Place showing nmore than Four's Company who did not seem to handle the track/bends. LP drawn wide and a very slow break, Showed something in being able to recover some ground on the rail, and make some gound back on YJ before Halfway. An early fade but at least check her further STO. ====== Text of Evans' rep WTRB Report = "The trainer's representative of David Evans, the trainer of RAJ TO RICHES, unplaced, reported that the colt boiled over in the preliminaries and was also unsuited by the Soft going.". |
