Going changed to Soft before racing started. GSS as on Decs. Rain forecast for the day. through to race time. Light 1/4+ Tailwind from the Right. Race called the 'Scottish Brocklesby' worth more than £3,000 to the winner that THE Brocklesby. Race had to be re-opened at the entries stage because of low numbers. Pulled a 6 runner field together but another early race for 2yos where the money on offer could be used better elsewhere. That from a 2yo racing geek. Like the Lingfield Conditions race in mid-March which disapperead after a few running, etc. At this stage of the season there haven't been anough 2yos 'active' to warrant a race worth nearly £10k to the winner. Snippet from John Quinn's website on 2nd April = "A good number of our two year olds have started their quick work on grass having been prepared on the all weather in the first few months of the year. I am happy with how they have all wintered and would hope to top last year's number of two year old winners. " Quinn bought two lots (£38k & £24k) at the Ascot Breeze on April 1st (where he bought The Wow Signal in 2014). ============ Post Race Notes ========= Notably slow time and the ground not looking 'desperate' visually. Odd shape to the race with Tribesman breaking best and leading on the rail early but, presumably, setting a Slow Pace. Then First Bombardment, looking a possible 'Head Up Thinker' FTO, got the better of his jk slowly to pull himself to the front and XF uncontested to the rail before Halfway. FB then upping the pace a bit inside the last 2f and Tribesman behind driven along and not making any immediate progress. Seems quite possible that FBombardment packed-it-in during the last 1f and got overhauled by Tribesman who maintained his gap to the others for a clear win. FB looking like he was thinking hard and his movement not changing as if he got tired but instead deciding he had 'done enough' (or 'got lonely' in front to use the British Racing Defence doublespeak). Apart from the smaller and notably green looking Mr Morse (as Ellison's runner in the Brocklesby had) the other 3 in a heap closing into the back of FB by the finish. Not looking an appealing group in behind overall and suspect form (?). Especially for a £9.7k race with a £10k bonus attached. Quote from trainer Brown post-race = "Ultimately he could end up being a Coventry Stakes horse. He's the first of my 32 two-year-olds to run and I felt sure he'd win. He's got some class and he'll have another run before Ascot in something like the National Stakes at Sandown." Perhaps an 'All-Knowing Market' advocate could explain how that from Brown wrt Tribesman fits with the horse being 12/1 in the morning and 18/1 on Betfair at the same time, then still started as 3rd favourite. Isn't owner Fretwell supposed the be the sort of agent that controls the Market? Whatever, after two appalling years with his 2yos Fretwell was perhaps just pleased to have something that could win anything. This a notably early start for Brown and a trainer who does 'front load' and can get competitive debuts any time. You would think the "thought he would win" stuff was hindsight talking and he was probably more of his 'worrier' self before the race. Brown trains in part of the Aversham Park stables establishment that Fretwell bought and modernised so presumably has regular interactions with Fretwell and his son (the Racing Manager). Notes after full Video Review = Slow Time and a difficult race to get a handle on and to warm to. A lot of this seemed to be the going being difficult for inexperienced 2yos to deal with. Add in general greenery and a Start-Stop pace and a messy race. The winner just plugging on in the last 0.5f to win clear but not looking a better type. A heap of 4 behind him with the 1st/3rd through halfway going backwards relatively and the 4th/5th home running into the back of them coming to the line. The other horse adrift. Not an obvious Flow/Fold to the race and perhaps not worth worrying about a Rail Bias. Tribesman a notably early FTO for Brown and won by showing a low level plugging on and only stalling right of the line. Not a strong debut in the 'Temple Meads' style for a Fretwell 2yo. Add in the SP and inclined to think another OR70s one and poss for some some of Conditions sprint 2yo, a recurrent theme this year and perhaps the record is stuck. Ignoring the 'Coventry' stuff from Brown and the National Stakes an interesting 'halfway point' where he could be in comparison with some real better types. Can he develop that well? First Bombardment an interesting horse and still not decided whether he is 'dodgy' or not. He holds his head up most of the time and always looks like he is 'Thinking' too much. You could say that he has now finished 2nd in two races he was in a position to win while looking a bit 'Head Up' in the last 1f. Also, trainer O'Meara gets more 2yos than average who run to lower ratings STO than on Debut. First Bombardment looking up-for-it early in the race and fighting the jockey to pull to a clear lead. He travelled best in the race and the only runner still going along at his own pace into the last 2f. FB still 1.5L clear coming to the last 1f but, looking carefully, gets unblanced into the last 1f and jinks Left/Right. Loses some impetus at this point and seems to be still incontrol (not fading) as Tribesman plugs on past him. Fading in the last 100yds, Packing it in, or unsure of the hoofing on the going? Don't know, but clearly hasn't put a full race together yet and not straightforward but has travelled well enough twice to win the two Brocklesbys but is still a maiden. How much to trust him to grow up? Sixth Sense the 4th MaJo debut with the previous 3 winning but none looking fine tuned for preparation and probably in moderate-average quality editions of their races. SSense with a non 5f and non early pedigree which could mean he is a real good one showing up well at home in the 5f preparation because he is an OR90+ 7f 2yo. It could also mean he's a small one and easy to get ready. Probably in the middle of the extremes and an OR70s one. Slower start but got close up before 1f run as the pace settled. Travelled similar to the 1st two home to be going ok at halfway. Just a lower level plugging on away from the rail and not finishing the race off. Another who looked too green to really handle the going. Zephyr Breeze an expensive one for his pedigree and look a solid build medium 'bull' sprinter of the type the trainer buys. Trainer has a poor record with 2yos but got a couple of STO winners in 2014 with his first two 2yos to debut. Neither progressed. ZB looks another 60s usable one and since the trainer Front Loads then should be competitive. Likely to peak STO? The proximity of Smart Mover at the finish seems a negative for the race. Looked the smallest and perhaps not OR60s full term. Broke well but then got squeezed out of the leading line before 1f gone and seemed to get outpaced before Halfway to drop 5th. Ended up racing away from the rail and plugging on back to the others. Did not look one to follow and more one to raise questions about the quality of the performances overall in this race. Mr Morse the 2nd debut for Elison and another grey one from his owner who targets 2yos. At a much longer SP than their rep in the English Brocklesby. MrM a smaller one but might be solidly built. Drawn widest towards Centre track but got away ok and with the others towards the end of the first 1f. But, seemed to get a minor bump, perhaps just intimidation from SSense at that point and started dropping away. Off the back after 2f and driven along. Given he was making his final race effort before Halfway he was fading before the last 1f. Hard to judge him on this and another Ellison early debut not prepared enough to compete.. £15,000 guaranteed For 2yo which are E.B.F. eligible Weights colts & geldings 9st 3lb, fillies 8st 12lb Penalties for each Class 4 race won 4lb, for each Class 3 race won 6lb, for each Class 1 or 2 race won 8lb (penalties cumulative and maximum penalty 8lb) Entries 16 pay £ 75 Penalty value 1st £9,703.50 2nd £2,887.50 3rd £1,443.00 4th £721.50 |
