=== Post Race ===

Stiff Pace withj a pressing Lo4 after 1f with Jess, VG, WS & SZ out from the rail and dropping to a Lo3 as WS unable to hold his spot and squeezed back. SA niggled along in a stretched back 2R to follow the pace. Appleton in 3R on rail at Halfway.

Shaka Zulu running 2 wide overall and minor mark up for that. Wearing a small, brown pair of Cheekpieces after an odd effort LTO at LNGA. Looking hesitant and head-up there, hanging right on LH bends and wandering around with his head part up. Better here for the first 3.5f and racing a touch free in the front line. Once left in the lead with Jess & VG stalling early in the HS the antics less visible but still not head down and straight moving. Head to one side a bit, offer to hang left then hang right, then left properly. The put the head to one side once headed and move a bit awkwardly late on. Looking sub 75 and hard to trust in a duel in the last 1f. Laboured effort from Secret Ambition and another MaJo 2yo who ought to be able to win off OR72 and ran a bit better LTO but back to looking a horse with issues here. Jess ought to struggle off her OR70 and needs a lower 60s. But, in a week there Northern maidens have been won by horses with (inflated) ORs of 69 (twice) & 65 hard to rule anything out. VG perhaps not any bigger than Jess. Home Again claimed from a seller & outpaced here and probably the smallest.

Fahey said in July that he felt he had not shown his best 2yos yet and perhaps had better ones still to debut. Always have to take that sort of comment with some caution because Fahey's record for knowing the absolute quality of his horses is moderate to poor, gales on Thursday. Appleton the 79th debut of the year for Fahey and, similar to a trainer like Hannon, the better to best class 2yos he has can win FTO. OR75 or less types will need to find a race soft enough to win. Appleton his 14th FTO win this season but, unlike 5 years+ back, that 18% debut SR still means a solid loss at SP. Look at the debut wins and he had 10 between 5th April and May 16th, including his best 2yos to date with Birchwood & Lathom but some lesser ones mixed in. He then had a break with debut wins until July 30th and this was his 3rd in August. Are these member sof the "good ones still to come" he talked about? Check what quality Curtain Call, Mustique & Giddy look.

Even on VRev you could see why Appleton was making such a late 5f debut. He looks a bit physically immature and gawky still. Leggy and needing to tighten up generally, including mentally. Perhaps a touch taller than SZ and nearly as bulky. Appleton able to make the ground up on SZ in the HS for two main apparent reasons. Firstly, he is rangier and a better mover and secondly, despite being green he put his head down and went for it in the last 1f. Pricking his ears once in the lead. Appleton not looking a better type on what he showed bettering some, varyingly, suspect characters here. But, also looking a frame of a horse who moves well so check how he develops. An Average or 'Northern Novice' type one finding a winnable race rather than a 'Birchwood' who would have win nearly any Northern maiden first try on raw ability. [Update] Interesting to look back at Birchwood's debut win and who is that MaJo horse running an encouraging enough 2nd as 2nd fav? Secret Ambition Running to an [Est] which is presumably wrong and he has never got near since. Has Been or Never Was Been?
