SUMMARY
Stiff- Westerly Wind = Helpful in the long Bend, 1/4 Tailwind from the Left in the HS.

=== Pre Race ===

Quote of 'February Report' on the MPR website wrt to Spongy = "We can report him in great shape. He is coping with all his work, albeit only steady at this point, however it is fair to say that he is already ranked very highly amongst the Richard Hannon Everleigh 2yos and threatens to be both one of MPR and Richard Hannon's better 2yo colts for 2015 and 2016. He canters every day on AW and sometimes grass and gets to the top of the hill with little effort. How good he will be will depend on how well his copes with work in his faster paces come March or April time, but at the moment we couldn't recommend more highly that someone purchase a share".

Video of Spongy from April 4th at Hannon's working on the AW atrip alone. Video is slow motion. Downgraded view after watching this. Looks only medium or a bit smaller. Ok strength in front and reaches well in front. But lacking power behind and just ok neat. Not the strong type expected from the blurb hype. Hughes goes to CHFD so is the movement making him any better than the size/power looks?

=== Post VRev ===

In Profile possibly a strong race. On the ATR pictures and the VRev inclined to drop that down to being an ok one with solid Open Maiden types but need further info to think it is better than that. Fast Conditions with a helpful wind and an average pace at most. Carrington getting to the lead then slowing the pace and stacking the field on the bend with the field stacked in 2 Ranks of 3 at Halfway.

Carrington looking a strong 80+ sprinter type on debut. AP Video pictures here suggesting the pictures from NMKT might have been misread a bit. Looking fitter but lighter build than that here and medium size at most. Still green to some extent and needed rousting along from a slow start and hanging notably left in the last 0.5f. But, allowed to get to an easy lead on the rail and set the pace to suit himself. Showed on zip on the bend into the HS and able to make a break on the others assisted by the race shape. Size an issue but looking to have good zip for the power he has. 80ish?

Carrington more interesting as the first STO runner for trainer Appleby. In 2014, his first full season, the early season debuts were mostly unready and green. The stable's winners started on May 22nd with a batch of STO wins. Looking at his STO stats since he started training in August 2013 and he shows a profit blindly backing every STO runner at SP. Split it down by Month Group or Race Distance on the STO and the only loss is with STOs over 9f in late season (slow boat alert). Carrington not fully knowing here and an earlier first win than in 2014. Clearly worth taking the STOs seriously overall.

Pass The Moon looking a filly amongst the males and not obviously fully Open Maiden level. Got a bump early and ended up in the 2R one off the rail (1 wide) at Halfway. A solid effort in the HS against the 3rd/4th home but lacking the winner's pace and kick. 70+ but neeeds checking for ok at 75+ & check how race works out. Has it been underestimated?

Muatadel has been entered in more than 10 previous races including the race here on the first day of the seasons. Another possible better one on profile and his MaJo website pedigree making him look a bulky and strong one. Not the taller and a bit narrow type of the sire. But, that seemed to have gone away and looking a bit taller than Carrington but lacking some build. A mental downgrade at that point. Settled 2nd outside Carrington but outpaced by that one's effort into the HS. Just ok level plugging on after that and stalling by the line. Another around 75 unless the whole placement of this group on the absolute scale wrong (Race Pace, AP Video & greenery intervening).

Spongy ridden by Hughes which could be construed as the Jk wanting to be there for a good one's debut. Hughes has announced he will retire at the end of the year and wants to end it as Champion Jockey again (under the revised structure and early finish). Which could also mean he is doing AW evening meetings because he knows it counts and will be the last season he does it (as a Jk). He was beaten on favouries either side of this race and then stayed through two blank races to ride the winner of the 21:05pm race. Dedication. So the Spongy ride might also be just fitting in with the schedule.

Spongy looking similar to the notes above and not that neatly made. Fine for 70+ but hard to see where the idea that he is a Hannon stable Star 2yo comes from (MPR blurb gets so carried away they say he will be a 2yo star of 2015 AND 2016, which would be quite something.) Two green here and got well behind but able to catch up on the bend as the pace slowed and be 2 wide in last. Made the second best job of going with Carrington's kick to the HS and the 2nd best forward effort after getting blocked in. Seems fine for 75 on those efforts and any better?

Fakeittilyamakeit an expensive one for Evans and running at a time when he might introduce a FTO winner type as a second batch after usual First 2 weeks of the season big set (delayed in 2015 for some reason).

Smaller medium and a touch narrow shape which is typical for the trainer and the outcome of his preparation. Running widest in the Front Rank and an ok relative effort in the HS until fading back in the last 0.5f+. 70ish.
