Racing Summary
DATE PROFILE/COMMENTS
April 4th: Declared for
Yarmouth 5.2f Maiden
  • Sold as a foal. Not owned by one of the usual set of owners the trainer has early 2yo runners for.
  • By veteran sire who has a good record with 2yos. Has better record at 6f+ but can get precocious 5f types.
  • Dam has produced one 2yo who rated around 70 over sprint distances.
  • Veteran trainer targets 2yo racing and has a good record. Notable for having a plan for most 2yos and being flexible enough to use whatever approach is needed to give best chance of a win.
  • Trainer has had six 2yos make their debut in April 2002-4 and these have been of varying ability but all have won in the season, most by STO.
  • Trainer does not target FTO wins although they are usually competent so the better runners can place or occasionally win on debut. Runners often 10lbs or more below best on debut.
  • In summary a mostly positive pedigree for a minor sprint 2yo rating around 70 early. Probably significant that the trainer has chosen him to run early. Unless strongly backed likely to be having a preparation run to an identified STO win attempt.  Profile [63]
  • April 14th: Yarmouth
    Post Race
  • Ran for a shrewd trainer who normally aims for STO wins with his earliest runners. Drifted from 7/2 to 11/2 and on brief TV pictures did not look fit enough to compete on debut. Ran below expectations sitting in midfield and making some progress as the leaders faded before fading in the last furlong. Probably showed what was expected by the trainer and would expect to see him targeted for a win in the right grade NTO. On the evidence here that's likely to be at Brighton with a 5lb apprentice on.  Estimate [51]
  • April 24th: Brighton
    5.3f Maiden
  • Turns up at Brighton as expected for this trainer but with D. Holland riding and not a 5lb claimer. Perhaps he thinks he needs a strong ride more than he needs 5lb off.
  • Ran an uncompetitive race on debut as the market indicated that day. He finished among a group of runners of varying ability with Mr Rooney winning rating 70+ just behind him and two other who ran poorly later.
  • On profile he's the type of 2yo who can rate 68-74 that the trainer is trying to ensure he gets a maiden win with. This is likely to be a good improvement from debut. Profile [68]
  • April 24th: Brighton
    Post Race
  •  Looked an obvious example of his trainer's "STO Brighton & average-type-breaks-his-maiden" strategy from before his first run (lack of support on debut and lack of fitness). In a normal Brighton maiden he would probably have won but this race was stronger. He added his own problems to perform slightly below expectations.
  • He looked fitter, although still with some scope to tighten left, but was slightly wound up, sweating on his neck and mulish when being loaded into the stalls.
  • He ran freely in the race and got into a contested pacemaking duel with Hits Only Jude. He kept on best of this pair but was headed around 1 furlong from home and slightly faded from there. A solid run and in line with the expectations that he's around a 70 rating type. Probably see him run again relatively quickly in a targeted lower quality maiden.  Estimate [63]
  • May 17th: Leicester
    6f Maiden
  • Ran a little below expectations at Brighton and showed minor attitude problems. Has been given a break.
  • The form of his Brighton run looks ok with the first winning over 6f next time and the second filling the same place in a similar race. Profile [68]
  • May 30th: Leicester
    5f Maiden
  • Uneasy 15/8f favourite here on last run with L Dettori riding. Broke right handed and raced wide of the rail. Pressed the pacemaker (won) at halfway by a half length but under pressure on the climb to the last furlong and faded from 1f out (jockey easy in the last 1/2f). Estimate [53]
  • Apprentice rides today and suggests the trainer knows he's struggling to get a win and looking for any little 'edge'. Again meets Mr Sandicliffe who beat him by 3L last time. We've presumably seen the best of him and getting back to low 60s rating is Probably his level.  Profile [63]
