2002 - 2004 Statistics

N. A. Callaghan (Newmarket)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Good, reliable trainer that takes 2yo racing seriously. Increased number of 2yos and runs in 2003-4 following a notably good 2002 season with a good quality group of 2yos. The 2yos are a mix of those bought at the sales (around two thirds) and some owner-breds which can include useful runners.
  • The sales purchases are mainly bought for between 10k to 70k gns. He often has more expensive 2yos for owner M. Tabor and these are usually by new Coolmore stallions (Tabor part of the organisation). He particularly likes the Coolmore stallion Danehill Dancer (whom he trained). Some evidence that he tries hard, when necessary, to get early 2yo winners for Coolmore first season sires.
  • He usually has a group of runners that are targeted at 2yo racing and these will make relatively early debuts and run an above average number of times during the season. Many will run to 6TO or more.
  • Notable for trying hard to find suitable races and conditions for his 2yos and also in identifying and using whatever edge is needed to get a win out of a moderate to average runner. For example, dropping horses in quality by running them at Brighton (4 wins in 04) and in sellers; using good apprentices; using headgear; running in poorly contested 'Premier' claimers etc. This attention to detail also shows up in that he has a good record of getting multiple wins by 2yos, especially given the competitive racing set-up which is designed to limit multiple wins.
  • He is also notable for identifying which runners to bring along more slowly for their nursery careers. These runners often show improved ratings in their later runs and he gets above average numbers of wins from 4TO onwards. Two good examples are Anuvasteel and Silver Wraith who both made debuts in the same Goodwood maiden (Silver Wraith a NR in an earlier Newmarket race) in May and were still improving in nurseries later in the season.
  • He does not target FTO wins although most runners are competent on debut and can place in weaker races. His FTO wins are usually with his highest quality horses and they often 20lbs or more below the rating they finally achieve. The lack of a FTO winner in 2004 probably partly due to the fact he did not have a high-class 2yo.
  • Most debuts are at Newmarket although the FTO wins are often at shorter prices at other courses, including targeted FTO wins like "that was the plan" Mazepa at Nottingham and Barbajuan at Lingfield (turf).
  • FTO SP is a variable indicator of FTO performance. Only the shortest SPs (3/1 or less) and those below 10/1 and backed are likely to be competitive for win. For example he has had no winner and only two places from 6 debuts in 03-04 with runners between 5/1 and 10/1. The shortest priced debuts in 2004 included two horses that finished second.
  • Notable that he has subsequent winners which finish in the full range of finishing positions on debut. For example in 2003-4 seasons 8 of the 10 horses that placed on debut were later winners. However, and this is unusual, as many as 9 of the 19 horses that finished 7th or worse on debut won during the season. This is probably further indication of the variety of strategies he uses with different types of 2yos. He is not a "win a maiden in first two runs.....and/or, then what?..." trainer.
  • Has a good record with runners who have shorter breaks to their STO runs (14 days or less).
