Pre-race Summary

The 2002-2004 results are at the bottom of the page for comparison
APRIL 30th SUMMING UP
  • The lack of a runner with strong winning form or a FTO runner from a stable that targets strong debuts has produced a very open race. None of the six could be ruled out because even the lowest racked is still close to the top rated and the standard required to win is quite low.
  • A race unlikely to be of any notable future relevance unless Dream Rose is useful and she is likely to receive quite strong support on debut if she is.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • Very variable quality and relying on a small set of trainers to provide the better types. The 2002 race was notably good with Supersprint winner Presto Vento winning from subsequent Group 2 winner Never A Doubt.
  • 2004 saw an average version of the race with Lady Filly reaching her best level in winning from mostly moderate to average types.
  • The 2005 race looks at the low end of the range with no good previous winner from either R Hannon or WGM Turner.
  • TRAINERS:
  • R Hannon usually targets the race with his best early sprint filly and won the race in 2002-3 with previous winners who then were declared for the Queen Mary. In 2004 he lacked the early type and ran two fillies on debut. Neither of these were useful although Spree (who was the second string on the day) won her next run and ran in the Queen Mary.
  • N Dutfield regularly uses the race and often runs more than one filly. These tend to be a wide range of abilities from the nearly useless to the useful (she won the race in 2001 with Mizillablack).
  • WGM Turner uses the race for the best of his early winners but has no runner in 2005 reflecting his lack of a wining filly so far.
  • M Channon has run four fillies in the race 2002-4 mostly for owner-breeders. Only one of these has won a race at 2yo.
  • SIRES:
  • No first season sire has a runner.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Suesam was rated 64 at the sales. Small with medium build and ok length for her size. She looked limited to 60s ratings.
  • Smooch was rated 58. Small with medium build she was lengthy for her size. She was an odd mover behind. She seems to have improved her build since the sales.
