SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-

11 times former champion trainer and testament to the fact that if a trainer is only good at one thing, then it had better be recruitment (of horses). Number of 2yo runners and winners has continued to decline and reached another low point in 2004. The quality has decreased along with the numerical decline.
The majority of runners are owner breds. He has a few 2yos bought at the sales and these include some cheap 'buys' (possibly buy-backs) with no success.
His strategy with 2yos has remained the same. He uses the very common approach of trying to win a maiden in the first two runs with the better horses then stepping up in class and the others being retired to wait for 3yo season.
He prepares his runners thoroughly for their debut runs and the level of form they show on debut is usually what they are. The message is that other than the exception of superior runners who win on debut, do not expect improvement STO from the others.
FTO SP shows some correlation with FTO performance with the very shortest SPs tending to be the better types and capable of winning. Particularly note SPs less than 3/1.
Some evidence in 2003-4 that the runners he knows have the ability to win a maiden will make debuts at better courses (Newmaket, Newbury and Goodwood) while the lesser runners will go to lesser Midlands and Northern courses.
