2002 - 2004 Statistics

P. W. D'Arcy (Newmarket)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Medium sized stable and has run between six to eleven 2yos in seasons 2002-4, increased from previous levels. The 2yos are split between owner breds and those bought at the sales. The sales purchases are usually in the range 5k to 25k gns but he gets occasional more expensive runners (3yo Group 1 winner Indian Haven cost 62k for e.g.).
  • Although he does target 2yos wins he has an inconsistent and patchy record. In the four seasons 2000-03 he had 5 2yos winners from 20 runners which is alright. However 4 of the winners were capable of rating 100+ so could win on natural ability. The other 16 runners produced one win in a moderate Windsor fillies' auction race which is less good. In 2003 he got four placed runners from 6 runners but no winner. It is a debatable point whether this was a good performance in getting places or less good because some of those places should have been wins.
  • The 2004 season produced 3 winners from 11 runners which sounds alright but again the same doubts arise over the strategy. All three winners were later (2 in October) in the season with 2yos having their 5th, 8th and 11th runs. In each case the winners had shown variable ratings in runs before the wins. Good effort to get 3 wins out of 11 moderate horses or not?
  • He does not fully target FTO wins but gets occasional FTO winners with superior runners and/or in weaker races. He was quoted in 2003 that he liked his 2yos to be fit enough and competent on debut because they have higher risk of injury if they are not.
  • No FTO wins in 2003-4 but 3 places among the earlier debut runs (before mid-June). Runners tend to be close to their best rating on debut unless there is an obvious excuse (for e.g. Bazelle pressed the pace in a big field at Newbury and probably rated lower than she should because of that). STO runs do not tend to show much improvement unless the runner obviously underperformed on debut.
  • The FTO SPs are only slightly correlated to FTO performance and ability. In early season short SPs (4/1 or less) are likely to indicate a good run(ner). In the later season the difference is more subtle with, for e.g., a 12/1 SP probably indicating a runner with some ability and 50/1 a poor runner (in the same type of race).
