2002 - 2004 Statistics

P. C. Haslam (Middleham)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Large stable which has put more emphasis on 2yo racing in recent seasons. There has been an increase in partnership horses, and occasional more expensive buys for particular owners (e.g. J Millican after the Foot-and-Mouth windfall).
  • 2004 saw a large increase in 2yo runners after two good seasons 2002-3 which were notable for some superior 2yos. However, the larger group in 2004 were less talented and produced a lower number of wins and winners than the previous two seasons and at a moderate strike rate.
  • The 2yos are nearly all bought at the sales in the range 2k to 36k gns. The 2003-4 seasons have seen a small increase in purchases at the more expensive end of the range.
  • FTO performances are notable for being poor and usually 20lbs or more below the horses best rating. He is a classic example of a trainer whereby a forward showing on debut is a pretty sure sign of a superior runner. In 2003 he had his first debut winner since 1994 with a filly who later won at Group 3 level rating 30lbs above her debut rating. In 2004 he had an early AW winner rating around 50 who achieved an official rating of 87 after being claimed from the stable.
  • FTO SPs are not related to FTO performance nor overall ability. FTO SPs tend to be 20/1 or more in line with his 'non-FTO' reputation except for earlier debuts in weak (AW) races.
  • Given the low ratings on debut the runners tend to show good increases (10lbs or more) on their STO runs but have room for improvement on later runs.
  • In previous seasons he has been notable for horses making debuts at distances well short of those that they show the best form at later in the season. Many make debuts at 5-6 furlongs but step up to 7-8 furlongs (often in a single 2 furlong step) and show better form, including first runs in nurseries for example. The moderate group in 2004 did not show a winner from this strategy but previous seasons have shown examples such as Moulins De Mougins 5-6-7.5f (won); Allegedly 5-6-7f (improved)-7f (won Nursery); Alpine Special 5-6-6-7-8-8f (won); Blue Empire 6-8f AW (won); Good To Go 5-6-6-7-8f (won); Kinnaird made debut at 6f & good enough to win but won Group 3 at 8f.
