SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Average trainer and does not strongly target 2yo racing and slightly below average record given the quality of his 2yo runners.
  • The strategy with 2yos is a version of the "win a maiden in first two runs" approach. A few of the moderate to average types will run in nurseries and/or be dropped to claimers. He rarely steps runners up to high class races although he has not had a runner of superior ability in the period 2002-4.
  • The 2yos are usually made up of an even split of sales purchases (in range 6k to 60k gns) and owner breds with variable but mostly acceptable pedigrees. Note that one of his two winners in 2003 was transferred to his stable after three runs for an Irish trainer.
  • Debut runners are often very fit and run close to, or at, their best rating for the season FTO. The better runners can compete well on debut, especially in the first half of the season. In the 2003-4 seasons with mostly moderate to average runners he did not have a runner that placed on debut. However, most debuts were at a solid level within the runner's ability in this period and the lack of places on debut was more a reflection of the quality of the runners. Consider that he only won three minor maiden races in 2003-4 from 26 runners that made their debut for the stable.
  • FTO SP is not strongly correlated with FTO performance nor overall ability. Occasionally one of the debut runners in early season may be 'backed' to a short SP but these have a moderate record overall.
  • In line with the fit and competent debut runs most runners show only 1-5lbs improvement from debut and a number run to a lower rating STO.
  • The stable has not had a 2yo that has won more than one race in the period 1999-2004, i.e. all winners have won only one race at 2yo. This feature probably reflects the stable strategy, the full fitness on debut, winner quality and the lack of strong improvements in ratings from debut.
  • The stable does not target nurseries and has not had a winner from 11 runs in 2003-4 with one runner placed.
  • The runners which make the earliest debuts (usually by mid-July) will include the majority of runners which will be able to compete, and possibly win at 2yo. Later debuts tend to be moderate types or those lacking 2yo potential having development runs before being put away for their 3yo careers.
