2002 - 2004 Statistics
N. Tinkler (Langton, N. Yorks)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Unusual approach to 2yo racing and has a poor record. Usually runs around twelve 2yos each season and most run to at least 3TO and some to 6TO. However, despite the relatively high number of 2yo runs the stable does not appear to be targeting 2yo wins. Strike rates are always low at around 3% and the stable had no winner in 2004.
  • The lack of success with 2yos is also unusual given that the 2yos, while not expensive, are well above 'bargain basement' buys. All 2yos are bought at the yearling or breeze up sales and, for example, in 2004 six of them cost between 10k to 25k gns. They include runners with obvious 'sprint 2yo' pedigrees.
  • In the period 02-03 the stable had 4 wins with 2yos, 3 of these were in sellers (and none rated above 65). They also had a 'winner' in a weak auction at seller rating (and this race was lost later following a disqualification, probably for failed drugs test).
  • In 2003 the stable lost Raphoola after she had placed in a seller 3TO. She won her next two races for trainer M. Johnston showing improved form.
  • The low quality of runners make FTO approach slightly difficult to judge. Debuts runs tend to be well beaten at long SPs. However, most runners are close to, or at their best rating on debut and many do not progress. The 'readiness' on debut led to a low level FTO win in 2002 (later disqualified) and the stable gets the occasional long priced debut place.
  • It is interesting to consider the cases of the the four runners he has had placed on debut in the seasons 2003-4. The table summarises their later performances. It is probable that the debut places were over-rated in some cases but overall not a good feature.
  • Name Debut Place/SP Future Runs
Perfect Balance 3rd at 14/1 (6f) 4 month break, 2 lower rated runs at 8f
Infidelity 3rd at 100/1 Ran to lower rating STO at 9/4, won 8TO back at debut rating
Sir Loin 3rd at 33/1 Slightly lower rating STO then three poorer runs
As Handsome Does 2nd at 33/1 Two lower rated runs S/3TO then back at debut rating 4TO

  • It's not easy to explain the overall lack of success, some of the sales buys are on the small side, the stable jockey could be stronger, etc. The law of averages suggest he ought to have two 'natural' 2yos who can rate 70+ and win in 2005, but that  roughly 3% strike rate over six seasons is a worry.
  • Notable for using tongue ties more often than any trainer other than S. B. Suroor.
