April 7th: Declared for
Leicester 5f Maiden |
Sold for lowish price at Tattersalls Ireland.
Second season sire made a good start with his 2yos in 2004 getting 5 individual
winners from only 9 runners. These were not high quality but a good record
nonetheless.
Sire got precocious runners and early 5f winners.
Old dam is quite well related but unraced. In a long career she has produced
only four winners and most runners have been of moderate quality.
Trainer is the son of BA McMahon who is now his assistant. This is his
first season with a training licence and this will be his second runner.
The first was inexperienced an unplaced in the Brocklesby for important
owner J. Fretwell having been backed from 25/1 to 10/1.
In summary positives from the sire but other factors make him difficult
to place. Especially because we are still learning about the trainer's
approach. Profile [50]

Post Race |
Small but with some build and just fit enough on debut. Has prospects to
be a minor, 60s rated sprint winner.
The second runner for the new trainer and owned by his mother. Backed from
5/1 to 3/1 second favourite. Pressed the limited pacemaker who set a moderate
pace on soft ground in a slow race. Poor fade with the limited runners
in the last one furlong.
The trainer has now had two runners (one for his most important owner and
the other for the family) and both have received market support and both
have run poor races. His father, later in his career, used to take a 2-3
runs to develop the muscle on types like this and because of their early
debuts they could then be competitive in sprint races at their level.

5f Novice |
The trainer has had three further debuts runs since this one ran and all
have shown inexperience and lost ground at the start. All have shown ability
to recover quickly into the 'bunch' and managing to finish placed.
He was due to have his first STO runner yesterday with one of these slow
starters. However, that one was a non-runer.
Should show solid improvement to be close to his natural level here.

16/1 fourth favourite and ran a poor race on debut in a weaker race when
supported. Had looked a type that would need to develop to reach mid 60s
rating. The jockey seemed to have as his priority teaching him to settle
in this race. Broke a little left handed but then ran slightly freely but
the jockey held him up and took the opportunity of More Time crossing in
front of him to settle him and drop back. Held up 3 furlongs off the pace
at halfway and no progress as the race quickened before stalling in the
last 1f. Ran below a low level of expectations but the lesson in settling
could account for that. Still needs to develop to reach 60+. Estimate

Has the potential to develop a little further and should be ready to show
close to his best form if he has that ability after two development runs.
