April 4th: Declared for
Yarmouth 5.2f Maiden |
Made solid if unexciting price at Goffs sales.
Sire has a very good record with 2yos and ok for producing 5f and precocious
runners. Has already had a debut winner with his only runner in 2005 by
Wovoka who cost less than this one.
Dam was very well related and used to be owned by the Maktoum family. Has
possibly not had a runner since her 1997 foal and not a winner since her
1993 foal who was trained by the trainer here. That runner was a precocious
and useful sprint 2yo.
Major trainer does not target debut winners although his debuts in 2003-4
have been more ready than previously. However it is still the case that
usually only the very best win on debut.
Trainer has debuted eleven 2yos in April in 2003-4 and all have been later
winners, the majority average or better. Only the superior 2yos Attraction
and Joseph Henry have won on debut from that group.
In summary a good pedigree for a competitive sprint 2yo if you can ignore
the dam's patchy runner record. However, those doubts are slightly lessened
because this one is here, ready to run, in April of his 2yo career. The
sales price is acceptable for a race this early. The trainer's methods
means he is unlikely to be ready to win unless useful+ but definitely a
runner to assess for what type of winner he might be. Profile

April 4th: Yarmouth
Post Race |
Was the trainer's first runner of the season and was supported from 5/2
to 15/8 as favourite.
The trainer's 2yos which debut in April are usually capable of being winners
(most at least at average level). However, only the very best win on debut
so a surprise to see him as favourite and another example of the poor value
many debuts for 'larger' stables are.
With a mixed bag in opposition and Tafilah, Rundear and John Claude drifting
the price was affected by that.
Pressed and then set a probably too quick pace on the rails (probable slight
disadvantage). Even so, faded more than you would like in the last 2 furlongs.
Certainly not useful+ on this assuming the trainer has his runners as ready
as usual. Estimate [48]

April 13th: Declared for
Beverley 5f Auction |
Showed some pace at a modest level but not for very long on debut. Trainer's
other runner in 2005 made a similar debut and showed no improvement in
her second run yesterday.
In summary ought to improve but did not show enough on debut to suggest
he could get near to 70 here. Penalised 2lb for sales price and drawn 12
of 13. Profile [57 - 2 = 55]

April 30th: Thirsk
5f Novice |
Well drawn at Beverley and outclassed a moderate group by profile. Set
a good pace on the far rail that saw off the others and kept on well for
a comfortable win in an average time. Opposed again by the runner-up (Bow
Bridge) who has won a slow race on soft ground since.
Receives 3lb from the other winning colts and has the profile to be a 80-85
rated early 5f 2yo. Needs to prove he can handle a fast pace on a flat
track. Profile [79 + 3 = 82]

April 30th: Thirsk
Post Race |
Steady around 11/8f. Broke well and got into a minor duel for the pacemaking
with Lord Jack Flash off the stands' rail. Set a solid pace which had Ace
Baby & Ooh Aah Camara under pressure from the start. Appeared to stall
along with the other pacemaker inside 2f out and they drifted left to centre
track. Looked tired in the last furlong and plugging on. Looked to rally
a little to retake 3rd late on but possibly because he hit some better
ground as he raced second closest to the rail (the winner was closest).
Ran below form and possible excuses with the ground and the strong pace.
Even so he 'cracked' earlier in the race than you would like. Behind a
filly he beat comfortably on better ground (on her debut). Did best of
the stalled pace. Estimate [66]

May 30th: Sandown
5f Listed |
Form of his Thisk run looks better now and was probably underated. The
first two from that race were first and third in a fillies' Listed race
showing 80s ratings.
Trainer usually runs better types at the course and capable of rating 85+.
