April 27th: Pontefract

Made good price at Doncaster St Leger sales presumably helped by the 2004
performances of Joseph Henry. Runs for the same trainer.
Reviewed at the sales and rated 69 and was a medium size and just above
medium build. He was halfway between the two types of his sire (i.e. between
the small, strong 'fat man' like Sir Albert and the taller, narrower type
with some range that tends to need 6-7f). He was well muscled but physically
immature and not particularly taking at the sales.
By sire with a very good and consistent record with 2yos. Gets early, precocious
sprinters and good record with debut runners. Solid percentage of useful+
2yos. Notable for runners having better record on GF+ going.
Sire has had poor runs so far in 2005 possibly because of the generally
softer going.
Dam was an average sprint 2yo winner and has bred a useful and precocious
2yo in Joseph Henry.
The trainer does not target FTO wins and although his FTO runners have
been more competent in 2003-4 only the very best types tend to win.
Trainer has debuted eleven 2yos in April in 2003-4 and all have been later
winners, the majority average or better. Only the superior 2yos Attraction
and Joseph Henry have won on debut from that group.
He has had three FTO runners in 2005 who were prominent for 3f+ before
fading and not untypical trainer debuts. One of those runners has improved
to win a moderate race STO.
Trainer has different types in the race in the last two seasons.
In summary the profile to be an average sprint 2yo winner but not probably
not as good as Joseph Henry. On trainer methods he would need to be as
good as Joseph Henry to win on debut unless this is a weak race (and
the lack of a runner with previous strong form indicates it may take less
winning than usual). SP is unlikely to be informative unless it is very
low (less than 2/1). Profile [61]

4/1 joint second favourite at Pontefract where Strike Up The Band attracted
support. Made a poor debut and looked quite inexperienced. Drawn on the
outside and broke ok and settled at the back of the group on the outside.
Travelled 3 wide and lost ground overall and just plugged on in the straight
without making progress. Estimate [41]
Made a poor debut and did not show the natural pace which the stable's
debut runners with ability tend to. That race was on softer ground which
may have been against him given his sire's record. On sales review he ought
to be able to rate 60s at least but overall his debut was disappointing.

3/1 2nd favourite at Carlisle and put up a professional performance on
the firmer going. Led on the rail and set an average pace. A neck clear
at halfway He made a short effort 2f out and a was a length clear 1f out.
The second closed on him in the final furlong but the jockey appeared to
be doing just enough to ensure the win. Estimate [63]
The form of his Carlisle win is moderate although he won with some comfort.
Steps up to 6f but needs to improve by 20lb to be competitive here. Profile
