May 7th: Newmarket
5f Maiden Fillies' |
Retained for a moderate price at Tattersalls part 2 sales.
Until this season the sire had moderate record with 5f winners and 2yos
tended to need time to develop. So far he has had 5f and 5.3f winners for
M Channon although neither put up real 'speed' 5f performances. This is
his fifth debut at 5f in 2005 (three of the previous four have been for
M Channon). [He also has another runner in the same race - they're
all at now, Mick.]
Dam is well related and bred by Juddmonte Farms (K Abdulla) but has been
sold on. She has a 7f+ pedigree and made her only run over 7f in late season
at 2yo.
Reliable trainer usually starts running his 2yos in early June so this
is a notably early debut. He assesses his earlier debuts quite well and
they tend to be entered in suitable races. Because of this they can often
compete solidly FTO and the better 2yos occasionally win (like Sharplaw
Star in 2004).
FTO SPs tend to be a reasonable indicator of ability. SPs less than 10/1
tend to indicate a runner with ability (Sharplaw Star started at a notably
short 15/8 FTO).
In summary a mixed picture. The pedigree has plenty of quality aspects
but the sales price suggests a more limited type. The notably early debut
raises the question of why she's running this early - her pedigree is more
6f+. Probably a mix of reasons is the answer. She's not a star but a solid,
earlyish type. Either way she should be competent and SP should be a reasonable
indicator of expectations. Profile [60]
