W. J. Haggas (Newmarket)

SUMMARY OF APPROACH TO 2YO RACING :-
  • Consistent and reliable record with 2yos and usually runs around twenty 2yos each season and achieves wins to runs percentage around 15%.
  • The 2yos are split two-thirds bought at the sales and one-third owner breds from mixed sources. The sales purchases are usually across a wide range of prices from 3k up to 125k gns. The 2003-4 seasons have seen an increase in the more expensive buys including some breeze up purchases in range 30k to 70k gns. The breeze up buys have been targetted at 2yo racing and four of the five have won at some level (including a seller) during their 2yo year.
  • His strategy is to win a maiden, auction or selling race with his runners in the first three runs. The best runners which he believes will be competitive are stepped up to Conditions+ races. He does not over-try his 2yos. Very few runners will run to 4TO or more.
  • He appears to assess his earlier debut runners at home and they are normally ready physically and mentally to compete on debut. Those runners with ability are likely to place on debut and the best may be able to win because he chooses appropriate races for debuts.
  • FTO SPs tend to be relatively well correlated with FTO performance and overall ability. The shorter SPs (10/1 or less) in each season usually include most of the FTO wins/places and later winners. However, not two exceptions to this trend. Earliest debuts can start at unrealistically short prices if he has an FTO winner with one of them. For example, Sharplaw Star won as his first runner in 2004 and the next two debuts were shorter SPs because of this although they were moderate runners.
  • The other exception is with later season debuts (from late September) onwards which usually start at longer SPs but will include occasional long priced wins/places and a later winners. This suggests he does not assess the later debuts as fully at home. However, it is notable that a number of these later winners win on soft ground or on the AW (usually Southwell) STO. This suggests that he has assessed them at home and feels they need easy ground. With the recent dry summers this may have led to the later season debuts and longer SPs FTO.
  • In line with the previous point a turf debut followed by a switch to AW is a stable tactic to try to get a win with a moderate runners and/or one that needs easier going.
  • Runners tend to be within 10lbs of their final rating on debut unless they are of superior ability. He is notable for using shorter than average breaks from debut to STO runs (14 days or less) but, unlike most trainers, he has a solid STO record with these runners.
  • Notable record with winners in late September through to the end of the season in 2002-4.
  • He does not target nurseries and has not had a winner in 2002-4 and only one runner in 2004.
