June 21st SUMMING UP

In a somewhat lacklustre 2yo season to date Hoh Mike has stood out
as being the 'real thing' over 5f. His comfortable defeat of Scented
Present at Windsor where he best the juvenile Course Record was the
best performance before this meeting. He has looked to have another gear
to call on if required, be mentally mature and biddable and be suited to
this stiffish 5f. Hopefully he can confirm this view and give us the 5f
performance we would like to see after a moderate Queen Mary (Sparkling
Eyes & Slipasearcher in the first 5, ho hum).
In a season where he seems to have run mainly undistinguished 2yos Peter
Chapple-Hyam has had two debut winners with Tariq & Dutch Art.
He said at the time that Dutch had been working better than Tariq. That
colt improved notably second time to be a strong finishing third in the
Coventry on Tuesday. Despite his pedigree he looked a true 5f type on debut
although the strength of that form looks a little less good given that
Simply Perfect could only finish second in the Queen Mary. However, he
should improve and provide a good opponent to push Hoh Mike to a high performance
level.
There are many similarities between Sonny Red and the Queen Mary
winner Gilded - same sire, trainer, sales rating level and unbeaten. His
trainer has his 2yos better prepared for this year's Royal meting than
recently and he should run well. However, unlike Gilded, he seems to have
some genuinely high class 2yos to deal with.
The others look short of the required standard. The Irish runners have
not managed to place at the meeting and City Of Tribes looks another
of a similar ability level on his defeat of Rabatash (unplaced in the Windsor
Castle). Cav Okay remains of interest when dropped in class and
on an easier track but seems unlikely to get home over this 5f given a
solid pace.
