Mannlichen (M Johnston, 7f Debuts). Mr Johnston's record with
7f debuts is bafflingly good so had to be included in the tracking. You
would think that a 'Big Ogre' of a stable like his in weaker Northern maidens
would lead to the SPs being too short and poor value.
-
But a 25+ point profit for 7f debuts in each of the last three years
and profits with 8f debuts (that is rare for trainers of any sort) in two
of them. Whatever the training regime he uses it seems to suit the 'stayers'
well.
-
This is his first 7f debut of the year after just an ordinary start to
the season with his 5-6f runners. Variable record with his 2yo debuts in
June at 7f. In 2006 it was 2 from 7 (both odds on) and 0-4 in 2007. With
many trainers a debut at 7f this early means a slow one that has moderate
ability. Not with Mr Johnston who can start Group class horses over 7f
in June. That 2006 set included high class 2yos Kirklees, Armigerent, Drumfire
& Silent Waves among some more average types. The four 2007 June debuts
were duff ones for the Maktoums. Mannlichen is a sales purchase for a non
arab owner so probably more chance he's a better type because he isn't
a limited Maktoum home bred being got under way prior to a later season
sell off on profile.
