      September 13th Summary : 
     
    Race Virtual Paddocks FTO P&L Qualifiers
    • Northern Acres & Royal Defence (Chester 2:30, D Nicholls, September+ Debuts). Trainer already well in profit with his 5-6f debuts up to the end of August. Debuts at longer distances are rarer but the evidence suggests the type of 2yos he has is changing as he has more runners and, probably more importantly, he has more money to spend. He isn't just looking for sprint 2yos. His first debut in the qualifying period was over 8f (very rare for him) and was second at 9/1 staying on after losing ground early through inexperience.
    • In a big field at Chester his two representatives are drawn 9 (Northern Acres) and 5 (Royal Defence) with the first of those appearing to be the first string on jockeys. 
    • Remember that low draws are a big advantage at the course and over 5-6f on firmer ground stalls 1-3 will include the winner so long as they dont set a pace that is too strong for themselves. The course is also relatively technical and debut winners are rare. None had won since 2001 until Madame Trop Vite scrambled home this year from a weak group over 5f. That filly went on to win at Listed level and ran in the Flying Childers yesterday which is probably a fair indicator of the ability needed to overcome the negatives for a normal newcomer preparation.
    • Northern Acres cost 70,000gns and has an 8f+ pedigree to emphasise the point about the stable changing it's approach from being sprinter heavy (nearly exclusively). Royal Defence has a more mixed pedigree and cost £36,000. The race doesn't look strong depending upon how well Akhenaten performs and whether Super Flight is better than he showed on a weak debut. Interesting to see where the best of the pair, presumably Northern Acres, can get to as he keeps on in the straight.
    • Note: Mark Prescott runs Point Of Light in the maiden at Great Leighs. He was originally due to run first time on June 4th at the tail end of his original batch of '2yo Ready' debuts. All seven of that original batch of debuts has won at least once but none won on debut with the STO run being a targeted win attempt in a suitable race. In that context Point Of Light seems likely to be a usable 2yo who has been held up by an injury rather than a '3yo Set-up' or a useless one.
