Some rain overnight & in morning prior to racing. This the first race on the card and field raced up Far Rail. Two Divisions of Class 6, older horse, handicap as last two races on card saw fields come Stands' rail. Both of those divisions run in around 76.15s & won by a OR58 who carried 18lbs more and an OR51 carrying 9lbs more. Moderate performance in this race and SH & PH hook up early and press too strong a pace on the (presumably) softer far rail. But, leaving aside the effect of the pace SH a disappointment in Paddock Review. 28/1 on debut which suggested not a strong type but appeared to run quite well beating the Zarooni runner on his side and not beaten far by Move In Time who race alone on the stands side for the last half of the race. Review suggest the rating for that race too high and SH not the ok Open Maiden type the form suggested. Another clue in this race with Jamie Spencer originally on Paper Dreams for Ryan and switched to SH when PD a non-runner. That suggest SH behind PD and that runners form not strong. Which suggest SH a moderate favourite and beatable. The pace ensured he was softened up for something competent. Tro Nesa even smaller but missed the pace and able to plug on past the faders to win. Trainer Duffield has now had a FTO winner in 6 consecutive seasons and SPs have been 33/1, 12/1, 6/1, 6/1, 14/1, 13/2 (supported from 20/1). SP here of 40/1 suggest the stable not think TN better than moderate and probably surprised that moderate and competent (as their FTOs usually are & two places from three debuts before this). No Poppy looking like on of those horses who can look promising, even eyecatching, with late race plugging on. But, unlike last time, the problems that got her behind here seemed of her own making. Slow to start on rail and then not pick up that quickly and then cut-off and shuffled back. Then not travel comfortably with the pace. Frontrunners collapsing should have set the race up well for her but she took time to pick up and struggled to find a gap (partly because she races head up and probably lacks a quick effort). Going on relatively strongly at finish but being held by TN who ran the competent race to pick the pices up that NP ought to have done. No Poppy perhaps need a longer distance and appears to have ability to win at OR65+ but always a niggle that she is never going to make it look easy. |
