SUMMARY
Moderate Headwind.
Race develop down stands' rail and leading line of pressers break into two in later race with some drifting left to centre track. Others fade back along rail and cause traffic problems for closers there. Ugly rail layout at course with, unsightly, 2 x double rail set-up on inside of course as the canter to post line. This added to on night by ski slope rail out on far rail pinching in at 1.5F out. Horses hurdling a patch of waterlogged ground where a they had had a 'burst' and racing delayed while they put the ski slope rail out in place. WS only one affected notably in this race when hanging left then having to veer right to get out of the cul-de-sac. Draw positions might suggest stands's rail advantage and race develop and persist there but not a conclusive story.
Peculiar mix of halfway positions versus final placings. Multi-way pace forcing as field race on stands' rail. Pace too strong and allow closers. Temptingfaith midfield at halfway and far enough back to be well placed to plug on past the fading pressers. Looksmart & Zamina the last pair after 1F and able to make progress through the filed as it broke up and several hang left.
Temptingfaith another winner to come out of the pace affected race at Warwick and ran better there than final result suggest. A good ride from Munro but too subtle to get into Ride-of-the-Week type guff. After a furlong Munro saw the pace too strong and drop back to midfield and a key decision. The another good move to switch out away from the rail to get a clear run at the leaders before going back to it once in the lead. All done quietly without any of that 'look at how strong he is lifting the horse over the line' nonsense we get too much of. Quietly assessing the situation and making the right decisions. Much more important than 'strength' if that exists in any meaningful form in a battle with something that weighs 10 times more than you do and can do what it likes if the urge took it.
Park Ballet probably go close to winning with clear run. Start from similar position to Temptingfaith but jockey choose to try to get run on rail and never get clear run in the last 2F. Blocked on two separate stretches and never able to make her challenge. Mugged on the line for fourth by the jockey on Zamina and a pretty unsporting effort not to allow the trainer to be in the unsaddling enclosure after the race given it's title.
Race meeting sponsored by the trainer's stable Sponsor and this race named in memory of the trainer's father. Trainer in interview before race said he had not targeted the race because he says if you target winning things it tends to not work out. He could have a, brief, discussion about that line of thinking with Mark Prescott you would imagine. But, you would not quite believe that anyway and just being cautious to avoid hubris from a restrained character. Trainer has had long priced SP debut winners at the course in each of the last two seasons and PB would have gone close to being another. So, he can still prepare one if he has the quality and the Market has not picked up on yet even with the extra clues here. Some 'Second String' effect with Delira in race for trainer but she has not progressed from debut here and you suspect she was wound up for that debut and has not been able to improve and a lesser physical type than PB.
No Poppy had looked unwilling or just slow to get organised & balanced in previous outings. First time blinkers transformed her into a pace pressing tigress and persisted best of the pressers but rating low because fading off the pace.
MLTB & Lovat Lane both placed second on debut and then unplaced since. Rather than 'not progressing' they alternative view would be that the places came in flawed races if ou look at them hard enough and do not read them as 2-D 'Form'. MLTB picked up paces held up off a stiff pace on debut to finish 2nd and the race has produced nothing worthwhile from behind the winner and two later winners who finished at he back for different reasons. Better to try and understand that than spend time thinking about why MLTB has 'regressed'. She probably hasn't got any worse and is running to a similar level. LL 2nd on debut in a notably slow time and poor form. Pacesetters went to fast again and allowed a broken finish. The best winner to come out of the race finished at the back again as a clue.
Fast pace and fading mean a lot of horses could look mildly eyecatching bumbling past the faders but without achieving anything worthwile. Highcliffe run for Hannons so a much safer option to believe she might win something because the trainer is so reliable. Hauled back early and okish progress until eased when hanging a little. Ransom Request topweight and bigger type in context of race. Trainer does not get strong debuts. Jockey Spencer the exact opposite of Munro and not managing the situation. Watch the first 3F of the race and it is a toss-up who is more startled by the experience of having to race with 14 others, horse or jockey. Okish progress into the faders with Spencer not spotting the problems in advance and bumping into the back of others and then easing the horse. Grisly.
