Some rain overnight. Pace much too strong and jockey Ajtebi, as you would expect, to the fore in forcing the pace and never checking how fast he might be going. Starting from a wide draw and never happy until he had finally crossed in front of the field. This took 2-3F and 1.5L clear at halfway. Jockey Nicholls on newcomer IS'man another forcing jockey drawn wide with Ajtebi and tried hard to hold him out wide and interacton of these two drag pace out. BoB one of those low OR70s maiden types that are always vulnerable to better types and lack full resilience to problems such as draw biases, slow starts and so on. A poor type of favourite often although looked to have found a soft race here unless a newcomer any good or Lizzie fulfilled the promise of her shorter SPs in previous runs. BoB ran perfectly well here fading off the pace but doing best of those that forced it and finding a brief response to Lizzie late on. Would probably have won with a more 'pace judging' ride from Ajtebi rather than him just reacting to what is around him. To make the point about the pace the winner was the only one of the four at shorter SPs no in the first three and pressing on at halfway. So, unless there is a Lurker in the long SPs, or a complete pace collapse, the only possible Closer was Lizzie. She was dropped onto the rail early in 3rd rank and nearly 7L back at halfway and being niggling along as Ajtebi blundered onward. Without some help from the horses in front of you stopping you are not going to make 7L back (actually win by 2L) in 3F on fast going (unless you are Group class). A good example of how pundits blathering on about jockey's 'strength' so much is ill informed. Put Dettori on BoB to give a pace judging ride and use the available energy efficiently and he would probably have won. Or, we would have found out exactly how good he is and whether he has any quirks. After this 'blast' we do not know and it might have affected hime mentally. |
