Fast conditions and difficult to make ground in straight on day. 9 runner field and only two of them start slowly. Other seven make similar breaks and all try to go forward to get a position near the front. This produced a Line-of-7 horses after 1F in the back straight with the widest horse (No Poppy) probably less than a length back. Since they come to a sharp, downhill, left hand bend after 2F the jockeys were realising by this point that pressing forward was not going to work. Pressing forward for the wider runners would mean a suicidal effort, if the horse had the pace to do it at all. If you check the halfway positions (on the crown of the bend here) they match the Draws for the 7 horses who were in that line 1F so they had to all drop back and in as best they could. A fascinating race to consider in wider terms. The first two favourites just happened to be in the inside stalls and both managed to go forward to hang onto to those places. That was crucual because even with the advantage of track position they only managed to pull 1-2L out of the rest of the field in the straight. If either had bungled the break by 1-2L they would have been in big trouble. If either had been in wider stalls they would have been in trouble on the amount of ground it was possible to make in the home straight. But, they were the form choices and you suspect wider draws would have made little difference to their odds. Given the lack of relative changes in position difficult to pick out anything eyecatching and probably a moderate race anyway. Presume the first four home pretty much showed what they can do. Hortensis notable for handling the bend very well and probably gained 1-2L over the average in the field with that. No Poppy not the most balanced and organised horse at best and the way this raced developed meant she could not show her true form. Caught on the wing of the Line-of-Seven then hampered by the unbalanced Better Self as she tried to drop back and in. This left her running wide around the bend and hung right herself on the sharpest part of the turn. At the back into the straight wide and made the sort of progress you would expect for less than full asking. Worth another chance where the race sets up better for her. John Quinn on a long sequence of losers with all ages and presume some sort of problem with string in health terms. In the context of how the race went and how green he was Grazeon Again ran ok and worth checking how he develops (along with how the stable is going). |
