Field race centre track. Below average pace and 13 runners within 5L of lead at halfway. Flodden running green and a couple of lengths off the group. Dettori on Bowermaster allowed to dictate slower pace and 2F sprint. Lot of horses held back at the start and effectively put out of race. No strong forward moves other than the first two and looking for hints of promise from the others and nothing stand out showing any 'different'. Another poor run from a Johnston 2yo with VA Race has a pretty consistent record of producing a smaller number of later winners and they typically finish in the 4-5 places behind the winner. Top level quality of race variable. The 2009 Result shows the front of the race was the best in recent years but it soon tailed off to those unable to win Open maidens (or anything at 2yo). 2008 saw 11 runners produce 3 later winners (finished 3-4th & 7th), 2007 had 5 later winners from 19 runners (in 2nd-7th range on day), 2006 had 16 runners and 3 later winners (2nd, 4th & 9th on day). Hannon has used the race for high quality when he has it and for long priced OR70ish maiden placers when he has not. He has won it twice in recent years, once with a STO runner. Last year's race had sufficient pace pressure to spread the field out by ability and the recent record suggests it normally does. This year seemed not to have much pace and perhaps the odd Maiden winner class in those further back. Godolphin pair in 2nd-3rd just look ordinary maiden class and not seting a strong standard for those behind. Winner NK may well be the (sole?) better class one in the field and a likeable debut and would have won more comfortably but for stopping a bit when he got to the lead. One whip tap and off he went again and won with some comfort. Given the variable way the Zarooni 2yos are developing in later races you would not be rushing to support his pair. El Muqbil is presumably ok for Maiden winner level. More interest in the Hannon pair for the future than the Godolphin. Both given easy times when not finding an immediate respoonse when the sprint started. MA hampered or would have finished close and Enabling hanging to the left for the last 1.5f and Hughes eased off. Interesting to see how the race develops and not an obviously strong edition. |
