Unbalanced quality race and interesting to watch it develop because of that. Halfway positions versus final positions placings suggest not much happened aside from a few horses fading badly.Major Art started in Newmarket maiden in which Hannon has run Group class horses in 2008-9 and has usually run the best he has available. Major Art Moore ridden that day but probably not a real 'Second String' the the other Hannon runner. Given a quiet intro and Moore not persist after a bit of greenness then some hampering got him out of contention to place. But, a profile that said he ought to be good. Bounced out here and, assisted by the rest of the field with one exception, able to cross to the rail and set an average pace unpestered. Moore asked him for an effort inside the last 2F and got a solid response. Then with one horse still near him at 1F out Moore decided to find ou what the horse could really do. Taking response and pulling clear to the line but not all out. No worrying about handicap marks for the winner and instead Moore trying to teach him something and find out whether he would be worth a go in something like the Solario Stakes next. Looked an ok 'trial', eh Ryan?. With the exception of Midnight Rider the rest of the field seemed more worried about making sure they finished a long way behind Major Art than trying to get involved. After 1.5F with Moore 1.5L clear, on the rail, setting his own pace with all the other jockeys looking at him you wonder what is going on? That's right, give the best horse in the race lengths start & an easy lead. How do you expect to even compete with him? Which is presumably not the idea. Go back to the parade ring and you suspect a lot of the trainer's patter to the jockey beforehand was along the lines of 'this Hannon thing might be a bloody aeroplane, whatever you do make sure you finish a long way behind the f**king thing. I don't want my handicap marked cocked up for the next 15 months'. That was just the public schoolboys, you should have heard the language at the less polished end. Chris Wall was too gentlemanly to play those games and MR a typical STO peak effort and probably beaten by a higher class one. Ok promise. The need to hold horses back to get behind and the leader not going that quick led to a lot of free running and horses fighting their chance's away witht he jockey. Hard Bargain a good debut effort for trainer Coakley (prepares pretty thoroughly for FTO) but free running. Jockey tried to hold him up here and ended up in a fight for most of the first 2F and never really got settled. Nothing left to make a final effort and underperformed notably. The others at longer prices and nothing really move through race like open maiden winner class. Top of the list of inactive jockeys, not entirely uncommon, were the two on the Kirk pair. Both horses on 3TO with one needing a more forward finish to be given an OR mark for handicaps. King Bling given a quiet time but managed a '7th' and can go handicapping and some sort of blossoming no surprise given the extended connections. Tullius talked up to some extent by the trainer in earlier season. In that context a surprise that the stable's 'Go to' jockey has not been booked for either attempted run. He kicked out and injured his jockey on his intended debut and gave the jockey a horrible time in the race here. Unwilling from the start and whipped before the first furlong was over. Head up and never going forward. The ability has been submerged by the attitude. One to check if Crowley ever turns up riding him perhaps. Love Nest another given a ride designed to try to get him to settle and his half-sister in 2009 had ability but left it unrealised by over-racing. Another jockey to pack it in early. Check how he develops & see if he goes down in trip. |
