SUMMARY
A solid but usable pace for the second rank. The run to a sharp bend and the need for a 12 wide group to drop in lead to a longer field at halfway than the pace alone would suggest. Different to how a race would play out on a straight course for example. DGeezah 3rd through halfway in the second pair 1 off the rail and 2L off the lead. RExchange 2L back from DG and on the rail in the 3rd rank. Gap back from the 5th to the 6th. The 6th to 12th spread out at 7L to 13L off the lead with only PH racing more than 1 off the rail and doing that because he has rolled off it around the bend. Check the final placing versus the halfway positions suggest the pace stiff enough to start folding the front of the field back towards midfield. SLily seem to make better than average effort overall unless first two home started to fold back by the finish. Beaten 2.75L at the finish having been around 5L behind REx at halfway. FFlyer on the outside of SL at halfway and lost nore than 2L on her to the line despite making places himself.
Making ground from well back difficult. Take favourite Memen as an example he was around 11L off the lead at halfway and about 7L off REx. Beaten more than 8L at the finish so no real forward progress. TV pundit baffled by why Memen had run 'poorly' having been excited by his effort at Newmarket and thinking he might be 'Group Class'. A classic example of how comparing 'Form' in flat, 2-D, lengths-and-pounds is hugely flawed. The nursery Memen won at Newmarket was a wild 'Pace War' compared to this relative trundle. The first 3 home were the last 3 at halfway and the pace had pulled the field close to inside out by the finish. The first shall be last and the last shall be first. Remember, that was on a straight track and despite the stiffer pace the field was only spread over 6L at halfway. Add to that Newmarket has one of the stiffest climbs to the final 1F as there is in the country. This race was run on a slight downhill to the finish. Comparing what Memen achieved without thinking about pace, halfway positions and lengths off the lead, how much the field folded back is just 'wrong'. And that from a well respected TV Pundit. On B2yoR estimates ran about 6L worse at Goodwood than at Newmarket. Not much ground really over 7f and getting shuffled back early and not being able to mount the same sort of effort on a wholly different track could account for a lot of that. But another lesson in how fine the margins are between a 'Good' run and a 'Poor' one and often through factors not within the jockey's or horse's control.
Looking at the worse than average 'Faders' and SThoughts a suspect OR and from a trainer that does not 2yos (well once in a Blue Moon). PHall a disappointing horse and trainer Fahey said before racing that the horse had not shown it's real ability on the track. At home it worked with horses that were better than OR66 level. A last place here just more of the disappointment?
