Soft ground with Heavy patches and horses making huge divots in the dip around halfway. Notably slow time and only one slower since start 2004 was by Local Fancy in a weak edition of the same maiden in 2005 = 67.08s on same Going. Race more of a staying test than a speed one with time close to a fast ground 6f time than a 5f one. Given the going and the time form to treat with caution as to how it would translate on faster going. Race 'Story' probably best told via the first two home. Phil McEntee has been winding horses up for early season for many years and getting early wins with moderate, and poor, ones in uncompetitive races. Debut wins were absent usually because of the horses beings OR50s trundlers. In 2009 he had his first debut win with Black Baccara at 20/1 in the fourth race of the season. That was a cheap filly by the sire Superior Premium. Mayfair Princess is by the same sire and her debut win means that of his 8 individual 2yo winners since 2005 as many as 6 have now won FTO in the first 3 months of the season. Her dam was a classic OR50, at best, trundler for McEntee & this one owned by his Wife. On profile a little, racy, type at best. In Paddock Review she was clearly better than an OR50 trundler being bigger and more rangy. Narrower than ideal but ok for this race. She also had a mature, almost masculine, let-me-at-them attitude. This has been noted in a number of the sire's previous winners bu can also boil over into being too Fizzy. The 'Clues' continued to mount up. Mr McEntee runs a low cost set-up and he usually leads his own horses up dressed in jeans. This one is owned by his wife so you expect similar. He was at the meeting in his best suit and had a stable lass, also over-dressed by 'lead up' standards, leading the horse. What is going on? The horse was immaculately prepared and won the 'Best Turned Out' prize. In physical terms the horse was the fittest there and the most 'complete' of the bigger types. Most of the horses McEntee trains are 'Eventmaker' owned and the only owner you see at the races is the guy behind that name. Here the trainer is stood in the Parade Ring with a large group of people you do not recognise. Family? Prospective new owners to impress? He takes over from the Stable Lass in leading the horse as it gets a bit fizzy. So, circumstantial evidence for a better debut and Catlin riding rather than a female apprentice to add to the view this is not just here for a run. But, the on-course Market would not have told you if this was a 'punt' because it was 40/1. If you had walked around the Betting Ring trying to put a few £10s on it would have been 16/1 pretty quickly. Perhaps they had hoovered up all the Betfair long prices. But, more evidence that 'The Market' knows not nearly as much as the Media profess. Mayfair Princess breaks a bit slowly but soon responds to join the leading line of three. Makes an effort after 1.5F on the downhill section and leads with Spencer on The Best Mode dropping to second and Molly Mylenis, who had been gunned out of a wide stall and then crossed in front of the field to the Lo3, outpaced and dropping back. MP keeps up the pressure and is 2 lengths clear coming to the final 1F as TBM starts to stall. Molly Mylenis had shown herself as a 'Stayer' on debut and plugs on past the stallers to clear 2nd inside the last 1F. MP perhaps starting to flag and hangs right throughout the final furlong to finish on the far rail with Catlin unable to push her forward at times as he tries to correc the hang. As she hangs she 'picks up' Molly Mylenis whi is staying on towards centre track. Molly M is carried over to the far rail and the jockey is unable to ride her. Beaten half a length and the Stewards decide a 3-Day ban for Catlin but MP can keep the race. While basically in favour of the let-the-winner-keep-it-unless-they-have-rugby-tackled the opposition approach that British racing now uses the B2yoR view is that it produced the 'Wrong' result here. If MP had hung across and not barged MM across the track then Molly Mylenis would have plugged on strongly enough in a straight line to win. If Catlin had ever straightened up MP then MM would probably have managed it. But, moderate stuff and suspect form. MP got an OR70 (Early) Paddock Review so a believable winner and an odd SP. MM is another, compact, little trundler of the same type as Little Libretto for Evans the previous day. Too slow in these conditions and a stayer. Would expect her to struggle in faster ground and perhaps more of a 7f type. But, probably low OR60s os physical type. A Gap back from these two to the rest in a heap of 'Stallers & Faders' collapsing back into the outpaced 'Pluggers On'. This group ran very slow times. The Best Mode - tiny, smaller than Little Libretto and Molly Mylenis who are compact trundlers. Wry smile from Spencer as he entered the Parade Ring just as TBM went by. Gave it a 'get it involved' and see what it can do ride. Ran ok for 4f and faded in the last. Still 3rd until the final fade and ease. Presume OR50s and suspect. Sky Diamond the biggest in this field but not obviously thrived since Doncaster. Appears to have grown behind and not level. Seemed to have lost a bit of muscle behind. Better behaved and never boiled over. Other than some fractiousness when mounted. But, his demeanour seemed too 'Watchful' and the fire in his attitude had been replaced with looking for what was expected of him. At Doncaster he had started ok then dropped back for no obvious reason after 1.5F. He did not fade there so mental issue rather than tiredness or being outpaced. Similar here. Broke Ok wide and jockey quiet early hoping he would carry him along and settle second rank. After half a furlong SD stops going forward and the jockey is drivinf away. After 1F this is now whipping and the horse has hung to centre track away from the other horses and dropped last. At this point he is looking across at the other horses. Stop 'Thinking' about it. Shows some ability on the uphill section to make a forward move to 4th and gets to 3rd as TBM fades back. Loses 3rd late as he fades. Suspect we have seen the last of him for some while and he will be given time to grow up mentally & physically. A longer term project in Padock review. Calormen had finished in front of Molly Mylenis at Folkestone but only because he had been more professional. Entirely anonymous in the race in midfield with no forward move and faded late. OR60s on Paddock Review and a weak favourite as expected. Odd attitude developed in Parade Ring going from slightly Fizzy on entrance to overawed in a couple of laps. Seemed to get smaller as this happened. Unknown Rebel better than expected in Paddock Review and low OR70s and typical, neat, early sprinter for the trainer. Try looking at this - Picture - of 2007 2yo Mazzanti and this - Picture - of UR. UR perhaps a little bigger & better. Still not knowing enough in race but kept at it. Ok promise for future. Mollyow smaller and not that fit by trainer standards. Too slow in early stages but another to keep at it and get to a volunteer 3rd on the lines past the faders. Leggy, compact and narrow. Not obvious maiden winner class and prob OR60s and need a fillies race or Nursery to win. Zarazar the 3rd string for Evans but owned by Diamond Racing and trainer would not usually pass on a no-hoper to that partnership. A little bigger than MM & TBM but too mentally young here and not quite as fit as the other pair on their STO. Outpaced on downhill section because too green. Swicthed from the stands' rail to Centre track after halfway and plugging on ok into the last furlong. Would have got to 3rd but for being slightly blocked by SD inside the last 1F and then hanging right with the jockey unable to press him afterwards. One to follow at a low level next time. Sailor Boy Ok size in group although atleticism look a bit suspect here. Soon adrift after halfway on the uphill section. Not 'useless' on size and build but why running so early on heavy ground if not? Why so useless? One to check for how he devlops. |
