GGS early morning Going. Rain from early morning with 2.5mm by 7.00am and rain passing through and due to clear late morning to leave a dry afternoon. Going Stick reported as 7.7 at 7.00am but going expected to become slower. Very High Wind with gusts up to 35mph. Half Headwind from the right in the straight (any 'cover' under the Far Rail dip?). Very strong wind in race blowing across fromt he horse's right and a lot of 'hanging left' at points during the race. Field stayed Far Rail side despite the going when coming over to the stands' side often the norm. Seemed to be some advantage in running the Far rail and racing away fromt he rail in Centre track looked some sort of negative. First two home in the lead & 2R on the rail at halfway and produced efforts which had them clear of the wider runners before 1.5F out. Trainer Mick Easterby can ger FTO winners and long priced places in his early batch of runners common. Prepares his horses pretty thoroughly for debut and the long tail of garbage he has meaning that debut wins rare. But, a single FTO winner in each of the four year's 2004-7 at 33/1, 10/1, 50/1 & 25/1 (explain that, Market wonks...). No debut win 2008-10 but early places each season at 25/1 & 66/1 in 2008-9 and Iceblast placed at 40/1 in, unusually, late season. This the trainer's 7th runner of the year and the previous 6 have produced a 25/1 place and another 4th at 50/1. So, a system of some sort if you have a lot of patience. A number of clues with Risky Art owned by the Sangster Family and given the cheap price you would presume Easterby isn't going to pass on a duff 'oss to them. Or, if they got it via a different route they wouldn't be keeping it to be an OR50s AW type. Jockey Gibbons a positive as well and an efficient job of pressing on and getting to the rail here and controlling the race in a way that apprentice O'Sullivan would not have managed. Medium size and strongly built with some length and an athletic mover. Perhaps higher OR70s. JTL faded poorly previous two runs and a tough, uphill 5f into the wind not ideal on that. But some support and clearly able to run closer to his full potential (OR68-73) here with a competent run in 2R along the rail. Unable to go with the winner but clear in 2nd of the widers runners. Bryan Smart in a period when he would noramlly be running better types capable of winning FTO and has won this race with Ceedwell FTO recently, for example. But his debuts this year have been well below par and not looking ready. Slowly improving and Exceedance presumably his better colt but not seeing 5f out after a free-running performance at EDIN. Wild Sauce cheaply retained given the pedigree and longer in the Market than the usual stable FTO win attempts. But, perhaps the earlier flops have dampened that. Ran well here and did things wrong but staying on best at the finish and overhauled the winner (probably eased) not long after the line. Slow break and then ran freely early. Made her effort in cenre track and took time to get going and green. Promising effort. FH presumably OR60s and smaller, neat type of his FSS. Ran a bit away from the rail but not a lot of obvious excuses. Made his effort and 3rd into the last 1f than fading. Whisky Bravo a better type and ought to be OR70s and underperformed a bit here. Coming from the widest stalls and racing wide most of the way. Slightly hampered early on then, again, green and unbalanced inside 2F out when asked for his effort. Still green and hanging into the last 1f. Can still improve rating for becoming more professional and finishing races off. Devlin has looked moderate in 2 previous runs and the opening price here in deference to connections. Had the advantage of running the rail in 3R and no excuses and made his effort and not good enough. Master Of Ages an NR at HTON (where the trainer is a Director and often sends solid types there) and running in a race here the trainer has used for better types. But, always hanging left and unable to show what he might be able to do. Trainer at LEIC on the afternoon (with Jk de Sousa) for the debut of an expensive one for a different owner. |
