GFF going with watering but no details given although stopped on Tuesday as rain forecast. No rain up to mid-morning before the meeting. Going Stick at 8.2 on WEDS [Check Update]. Reading update to 8.5 at noon but then 5mm of rain in heavy showers before racing. Stalls Centre. Medium Breeze as a Half Headwind from the Right. Stalls Centre but field came over to race stands' side. Winner raced prominently on the rail to raise the usual niggles of whether some part of the win due to a rails bias. But, Keyhole Kate raced away from the rail and able to make ground but from being held up where the prominent runners of the rail lane faded. KK another example of how trainer Walford's 2yos with ability show it on debut and the SP never bears any relation to what to expect. Nimiety finished behind NAlyasmeen FTO but at a shorter SP and got involved in the race more. Ahead of the other filly at halfway and then got a bit outpaced and green 2F out and NA plugged past her without getting competitive. Different set-up here up to 6f and Nimiety able to turn the race into a staying test. Nimiety a more substantial filly than NA (a typically narrower Clodovil). Chorister Girl lead initially and went over to the stands' rail and the field then followed lead by Nimiety who joined CG. Pace early average at most and several of the field pulling in the first 2f. Typically early effort by a Johnston 2yo with the jockey on Nimiety pressing the pace on just after halfway and then making the final effort by 2.5F out. Good response and 3L clear by 2F out, strongish finish and staying on well. Looks solid OR75+ filly and should stay further unless the rails bias misleading. Has enough size to be that level. Jockey de Sousa said he felt at halfway his filly had enough power left to make the effort so he got on with it. The early start to the later race effort seemed to spread the field out mostly by ability with odd caveats. NAlyasmeen borderline for Open Maiden class and left behind here but a reasonable effort to get to 2nd. Might end up being the placer type and vulnerable to anything with a bit or 75+ about them. KK for trainer Walford who has only had 2 x 2yos winners in few seasons with a licence. His two winners have finished 3rd of 13 at 100/1 (won STO) and 3rd of 9 FTO at 40/1 (won 3TO) and he seems to have his horses mostly fit for debut and perhaps not much progression. Not real Open Maiden type but ok chance to win a lower level Northern race befor emid-season. A gap back to two moderate fillies in 4-5th who are seller/nursery types in NP & FOH. Anything behind the first three need some excuse to be better than seller types at best. CGirl ran the rail and seemed to have every chance. Might not have stayed 6f but left behind by the efforts of the placed horses before not staying should have come into it. Lacking size anyway. Perhaps moving awkwardly later on so check for a WTRB. Phoenix Clubs a short price for a Midgley 2yo after some promise in finishing with a subsequent seller winner FTO despite rolling around and looking gawky and green and also beat Neil's Pride that run. Bigger type in this field. Ran too freely early here then, ad she had done on debut, started hanging left here as soon as she wa sput under pressure for an effort. This got worse and the jockey ease dher in the end. Struggles to carry herself at present but track how she develops. Trainer Bryan Smart normally has a number of strong debuts by this time of the year and 1-3 debut wins. But, the FTOs so far, including the better types like Exceedance, have been short on nous and readiness. AOH another in the race to mix free-running with hanging left under pressure then moving awkwardly. Ought to be better than she showed. Bada Bing very green and has a pedigree that says she should need 7f+ and a lot more time. |
