GSG but with note that 'Soft' in places on the 5.9f chute. 8.5mm of rain on Sunday. Going Stick at 7.5 at 7:00am. Strong Breeze as a Three-Quarter Headwind from the right. Old Stable Bend Rail out by 4yds = adds 12yds to race distance. Messy race and Pace appeared to be too strong. Field stayed racing in a wide line on the flat chute to the bend. Wide runners then fanned out to form a group running stands' side in the last 2F+. Another group stayed Far side and then spread out to Centre track including the closers from that side working their way through past the faders. Low quality Auction race which has produced some solid fields some years back with reps from major northern stables and odd southern one. Recent editions lacking that and thin on quality and future winners. Large field here but mostly smaller stables and/or already proven lesser ones from the major Northern stables (like the Ryan pair). Strong pace which seemed to put enough pressure on the field to bring most of the usable ones at OR54-70+ level to the front by the finish. BUT, worth noting the pace too strong and possible some of the Pace Pressers who faded most migth be usable but mixed in with the garbage. The runs of the Winner (Slow Start and green but able to get to clear win through the faders) and Mick Slates (probably 20L adrift at worst early through stupidity but able to get back to 8th by sticking at it through dead horses late on) indicators of how the race fell apart. Second place Auntie Joy some form of usable OR60s and ran the shortest way around the far rail and presumably ran close to what she can do. Which puts a marker on what level 'Promise' was being shown behind her. First 2yo win of season for Bryan Smart with Bartley whom he bred and owns. Very slow start for the trainer and presume some problem or not able to work on the grass. All debuts so far have been poor and most very green including Bartley. Not much better here but 6f and a wildish race meant time for him to work into the race. Still going forward at finish so perhaps has more to show. 40/1 surprise but these long price wins tend to come from a few sources and the Topweight (biggest horses as assessed by the sales) one source and major stables who get regular 2yo winners the other. Bartley fitting both criteria. Some notes of those behind. Koalition smaller and limited but running green and did ok as a pace presser. Trainer gets the best out of the small types so really might win a 'small race' (copyright Nick Luck..). Jay Kay bigger in context of group and moved well through mid race after getting behind. Trainer did ok with first 2yo runners, only 2, in 2010 and should peak STO. Flirty Gerty a typically aggressive Kingscote ride and led the group across to the Stands' rail. Did better than the final result shows in the context of the race shape and pace. Trainer Walford has had two x 2yo winners and both have placed on debut. one won STO but recording a lower rating and the other ran poorly before a break and winning 3TO. Keyhole Kate has the debut placing and looked likely to run poorly from early in the race and an early and complete fade. Would expect some physical problem or in-season or the like. Might come back 3TO after a break. In a moderate field the Mark Johnston runner Reemaya became a sibling of a US Grade 2 winner after she was bought and then passed on to Jaber Abdullah (which seems to be a 'valuable' thing for trainers, Channon, to do). Which means she is already worth a lot more as a broodmare even if she is useless. Meadium size and athletic enough. Always running head up and green and an early fade. Another 'lost' debut from the trainer which make it difficult to judge the 'real' garbage from the blossomers. Interest in Hopes Rebellion as the apparent 2nd string for trainer Carroll. Did worst of his three runners in the end but that hid how well he appeared to travel up with the pace. Jockey not moving much inside 2f out and still 5th coming to 1f out before the strong fade of the prominent runners here. If he can travel that well with the pace is he usable at 5f? |
