Auction for horses sold at Auction for £18,000 or less. Light wind on day as half headwind from the left. This race run in 1.29s faster than the following juvenile seller but with Van Go Go carrying 8lbs less than the seller victor. Stalls attached to Stands rail. Field raced centre track but spread out wide. Average pace at best and another good front-running ride from Kingscote. First 5 within 1L of the lead at halfway with 1st 3 together on Centre-Stands' strip and 4-5th at Halfway wider out and on the Centre to Far Side strip. 6th to 9th through halfway all within 2L of the leader with GTSunrise in midtrack and the other four wider out. Only Economic Crisis adrift of this wave (typical for an early Alan Berry debut which are often rancid) and 4-5L back and driven along. Raced played out in a typical way for a race in Fast Conditions at Redcar off a usable. Difficult for similarly matched horses to put much distance between them. First 5 through halfway within 1L of each other and total distance between them at the finish less than 2L and most of that VGG pulling out 1L (from a Neck at halfway) off her comfortable lead. Gap of nearly 3L back from the first 5 at the finish to the others spread out. Presume front half of race some form of OR60 to 74 handicappers and they might well be racing each other again, in the North minus the Evans reps, over the next 18 months. VGG overhauled off a soft lead on debut and the fact she was able to win ok here suggests not a better type, in context, in this field. More evidence that the Dascombe stable might be performaing to the normal levels after the moderate 2010. Flambard House the first runner of the year for Howard Johnson and a 'Ready FTO' trainer. 2010 a typical example in this regard when he had 4 individual winners and they all placed FTO & only one other place (by late season runner). Solid run and presume some form of OR65+ handicapper. Middleton Flyer given a suspect ride LTO and not a surprise to see her shorter in the betting than Aquasulis who finished in front of her last week. A small, very fit trier and perhaps would have been better in the following seller and winning that (Evans rep beaten in that race). Some form of lower OR60s type and very little scope. Aquasulis drawn widest and going wide from the start. Ran a little freely and then seemed to be intimidated by Storm Fairy hanging left around halfway and no response after that and the jockey part packed it it. Storm Fairy a more typical debut for the Burke stable this early after a Newmarket place with their first runner. Sooon folded after she started hanging. Tim Easterby still in a spell when you would expect a batch of usable handicappers to start out. Fayr Fall a little ew support and did enough in attended the leading line, getting a little outpaced but sticking at it to think he can be an OR60s nursery type. First Bid the first runner of the season for owner Fretwell who likes his runners to show up well FTO. Retained jockey Mullen at the course for this one ride. Trainer Ryan in period where he can start a better type but this one looked a limited quality profile. No indication that Fretwell thought this one had some zip from the betting. Another to do just about enough to be a lower level handicapper but owner tends to ditch this type through claimers of sellers. Alan Berry has a very poor record with 2yos made worse by being the son of Jack Berry. Can often go through a whole season running a lot of garbage and not producing a winner. Buys fillies because they are cheaper and the earliest runners each year might contain the 1-2 usable ones he has each year. Trainer also notable for moaning about lack of money, even before the current downturn, so Economic Crisis a typical outburst. Clueless early and ended up on the Far Rail from being drawn near the stands' rail. But, did find some response in the last 2f to get past the faders and not that far behind the leaders. A good question being whether that counted as 'promise' or drags the form level down a notch. Gone By Sunrise drifting and not looking like a solid Fahey debut in review. Faded very early after getting outpaced. Only a minor excuse of greenness and presume a seller type. [Tom Ryan, as ever, completely blanked his pundit partner when the other guy said "..but you would know more about GTS than I would.. " since Ryan rides out for trainer Fahey. If he cannot even say something coded like ".. this is one of the lesser lights.." or ".. might need this and be better with time..." then he should not be used for Meetings where Fahey has runners.] And finally, Over-the-Cliff time with Latte who ought to be the best of these. Supported in the betting but put in a less than complete performance. Still green at the start and then ran too freely. But, Going as well as the winner 2f out and the bulkiest in the field. But, did not pick up as the jockey expected and then started hanging when the jockey resorted to the whip. Either fading late on or feeling the going and probably why he did not pick up. The type of horse the Stubbs' fix eventually and should be an OR73+ sprint handicapper by season end. OTC. |
