SUMMARY
£10k Yearling Bonus Race.

Most of Britain in notably dry and warm spell. Southern Britain likely to record hottest April day since the late 1940s, for example. But, cloudy and misty at this course on day and much cooler. Horses kicking up divots and recording a slow time. Medium breeze as headwind slightly from the left. The second 5f juvenile race of the season here and both have now developed into staying tests with horses not finishing the races off. This winner 0.33s faster than Hamza ran, into a much stronger wind and official GS going, on April 1st carrying the same weight. Earlier 5f, class 6, handicap won by an OR61 rated 3yo in 61.6s carrying the same weight. Going changed from Good to GS after the 4th race (70 minutes after this one).

Race seemed to have a solid pace with the three runners from the Ripon maiden (April 7th) forming up into a Line-of-3 off the rail early with Alejandro in the centre, Almond Branches outside him and the smallish Kodiac King bullied into getting front rank after flopping about on debut. At halfway a second rank of three around 2-3L back right behind the leading line with Mr Majeika centre, Blue Shoes inside and Lucky Mark outside. Other pair 4L+ adrift and driven along with Lady Of Edge starting ok but then looking green and unexcited about being a racecourse. Losing ground early and not responding but looking too small to compete anyway. Drummoyne a typical bit of Johnston trained flopping around on debut. Another leant on the side when the gates open and then slip out part sideways to go wider from a wide draw. Got onto the group after 1f but then got unbalanced and lost 3-4L quickly and last driven along by halfway. All but the first two home in full fade mode before the last half furlong and some well before.

Alejandro effectively had to achieve the same as he did at Ripon in beating Almond Branches. He was able to set his own pace here rather than having to jostle for the lead with some enthusiasts. Not strong form but he should be able to rate higher. AB again showed similar ability to Ripon in being able to run with Alejandro for 3f, then make a solid effort with him, before a bad fade late on. That was much later her and still within a length of the winner until late on. Very fit on debut and probably only a small amount of improvement in rating. Trainer has struggled at times to convert this time of promise into wins and interesting to see when her form tails off. Third placed Blue Shoes grown ok from yearling but presume a moderate sub-70 rater.

Mr Majeika a rare 2yo runner here for Hannon and he had sent three horses to the meeting citing the good Prize Money as the incentive. Never threatened in the race. The comment on the Hannon website before he ran was "Mr Majeika is a nice Oasis Dream two-year-old who should enjoy the fast ground" so you would presume the ground after the rain will get used as a part excuse. Does 'Training School' make it compulsory for them to use the word 'Nice' in every comment about horses?
