Watering but no details given. Going Stick 8.4 reading. Stalls Stands' Side. Strong wind as a Three-Quarter Tailwind from the left. Heavy Rainshows between this - Race 2 - of the meeting and the two later 5f handicaps so times recorded on different going? Aricabeau Racing website Horses section = RHIANNA BRIANNA "A good looking chestnut filly who's built for speed and showing well upon the gallops. If everything goes to plan she should be Aricabeau's first runner and first winner for the 2011 season." & COME HITHER "Mick Easterby trained the Mother who won five races for him and placed a further eight times. She is a very nice walker and shows plenty of speed. A very nice prospect.1" Interesting background to 5f races at the Course. Between 2002-10 there were 80 run at the course for 2yos. 9 of the 80 have been won by newcomers BUT 6 of those 9 were in smaller field Novice or Claimer races. Only three newcomers have won in all the maidens and they were the equivalent editions of this fillies' event in 2006-8. 2006 was won by Eliza May who raced in Listed+ races afterwards without placing and beat a small field where the two with previous runs were a season maiden and a seller winner late. In 2007 a win by group class Starlit Sands who pulled clear with two other newcomers who tried Listed races. In 2008 the previous runners were poor again and the first two that pulled clear both tried Listed or Group races afterwards. The 26 Open Maidens run 2002-10 have produced no wins for FTOs and just two for STO horses. In general the open maidens have bigger fields and stiff paces which put pressure on newcomers. Racing prominently is a big advantage usually and winners coming from front rank or 2R. They probably generally lack the 'better' debuts (in context) that this event seems to get reasonably regularly. To make the point about prominent racing - an average pace, perhaps a bit above, was set along the rail by three horses with previous runs. They are not much good but the effect was to split the race into two groups. The first 8 through halfway provided 6 of the first 7 home. The only two to fade being the limited Justine Time & Elegant Flight. The second of those a typical Alan Jarvis debut in a period when he might produce usable ones and a 40/1 winner FTO yesterday. An ok size in the field of little girls but too wound up and fiery FTO. Race much too freely from a wide draw so faded. The only horse to make places into the first 8 was Rhianna Brianna for Mick Easterby who prepares 2yos pretty well for FTO and had the long SP 4th in the last 5f maiden at the course earlier this month. RB touted as a usable one on the partneship's website and an oddly made but ok size one from sire Bertolini who tends to turn on workmanlike ones, even the females. She got from being 5L back at halfway and 3.5L behind the runner-up to be 0.75L behind Red Shadow at the line. Lexington Spirit relaxed and racing in 4th at halfway a bit over 2L behind the leader and 1L back from Red Shadow. Which is a reasonable background to judge this race against. Despite being a £10k bonus race it looked a moderate field on Profile with the Fahey FTO a cheapish one (but for owners who seem to buy well in the cheaper range) and an vague bit of possible class from Channon (who is unlikely to get a FTO win here). The result shows that the 'best' of the previous runners in Red Shadow finished second and seting a moderate standard. That was despite unseating the jockey AP and jogging down to the 6f start before being retrieved and giving more trouble loading. She had shown pace in previous, solid, races before getting left behind and fading. Not far behind her is the moderate Nellie Pickersgill who may not even be seller class but again had the benefit of previous runs and a prominent race style. Lexington Spirit a positive for the trainer who seems to be able to pick the right types fr the £10k bonus races and this one a natural racer. Comfortably winner but even the better types who have got further clear from slightly better fields int he past have proved novice or nursery types other than Starlit Sands. Similar for LS to be a nursery type. Clearly not a race to be delving too deeply into the beaten horses expecting Open Maiden winners. But, if this is the best the North (along with a bit of Channon and Jarvis support) can collect together for a Bonus race there are going to be some poor maidens to be won in the North along the way. In that context some minor interest in a few efforts behind. RBrianna big enough and did enough late on, for moderate pressure, after a slow start to believe she can win in the OR65-71 range. Time Easterby has introduced 2-3 solid winners in the mid to late-May period (might leak into early June) in the last two year mixed in with placers and non-winners. He ran three here and Zaffy the best on Profile and drawn next to the rail. Supported down to favourite in an unusual plunge in an open Market. But, unsettled in the stalls and held by a handler for much of the wait for the others. Shorter then evens for a slow break on her stalls demeanour and blew the start entirely. Another to do enough plugging on from well back for minimal asking to think that the OR70+ ability might be there. Alan Berry usually has cheap ones and Busy Bimbo expensive for him but cheap as a sibling to a Group winner. That was the cheaply bought Look Busy who provided most of the recent highlights for the Berry yard. Typically clueless debut but plugging on with Zaffy and ok promise at a low level given the trainer. Paul Midgley operates at a low level and, like Berry, runs a lot of garbage and winners uncommon although he was building an ok record of getting minor wins until a poor 2010. That partly due to health problems with the horses. Not much promise from his runners so far but have run more prominently. Dolly Danca an even smaller sibling to a small one the trainer managed to win with. She looks limited but has shown good pace in both runs and able to lead this field. Not one to follow but might find a seller at a fast track if she stays 5f. A bit more interest in Headstight who ran too freely FTO in a solid race and showed some minor promise. Broke ok here but clearly the jockey had been asked to settle her. This meant he hauled her back too far to midfield. But, still going ok into the last 2f and some progress. But then started hanging and eased when trying to make ground into the prominent racers. Bigger than her stablemate and perhaps not lost cause at a low level if she can put a proper race together. Lady Victory either very green or unenthusiastic, or both, and driven along throughout by an active jockey and whipped earlier than normal. Never going forward. |
