GFG produce by watering but no details given. 1mm of rain previous day. Stalls Stands' Side. Stiff Breeze as a Crosswind from the left. Barry Hills on his website news for w/b May 16th = "Sea Odyssey will attempt to break his maiden at the third time of asking. It's actually his first time running on a straight track and hopefully he can use his abundant speed to burn the rest off. Should he win it will probably be Royal Ascot next for him." Channon News section of his website after the race = "ARNOLD LANE, owned by Nick & Olga Dhandsa and John & Zoe Webster, cruised to victory in the five furlong British Stallions Studs EBF Ladbrokes.com maiden in a manner that had class stamped all over it. A little slowly away, ARNOLD LANE began to overhaul his rivals at halfway, taking Sam Hitchcott to the front far earlier than he would have liked. Green when he hit the front, he saw off his nearest rival Red Aggressor by a length and three quarters with the next best fully two lengths in arrears. Another exciting youngster and a pleasing win for MRC although he now might have to start juggling his options with the big meetings on the horizon. 'That was impressive, he's always promised to be a nice type although it looked a tough little race on paper with several fancied runners, but we've had some nice types throwing in the odd stinker on debut. He'll get six, although I'm not against sticking to five at the moment. He has a lot of class. I suppose we'll look for a conditions race and then there's Ascot or even the Irish Guineas meeting where we could pick up black type. It's a great position to be in and I'm going to have to make the right choices with our latest batch of winners. .....Archers Road was a two year old sprinter, end of story, but ARNOLD LANE has the scope and a touch of class that can see him progress into a nice prospect" Stiff pace and that helped to produce the extended distances at the finish. SOdyssey & AEW hooked up in Centre track and went too hard and over-raing against each other. Both stalling by 1.5f out and fading back through midfield towards 1F out. Sabusa at 1L and trying to chase them at halfway and faded badly having been able to hold his position through halfway to the finish in recent races ridden more conservatively. Red Aggressor did best of the pace and just over 1L back at halfway but racing settled while ALane & SKhan at 3L and AL niggled along at times in typical active Hitchcott style. Channon in a period when he could produce some better types that might be capable of, his relatively uncommon, FTO wins. The apprentice riding two at Windsor while Hitchcott here and perhaps an indication of the expectations of ALane. Produced a real forward effort between 2f out to 1f out and going on strongly and winning with a little comfort. Another, just Ok physical type but ought to be capable of competing well at higher level. Red Aggressor blew out on debut after racing prominently. Presumably some mix of being green and getting unbalanced. Ran very well her doing best of the forward racers and able to make a real effort and respond to the winner until fading very late. OR80+. Clive Brittain has had a moderate record overall with 2yos for a long time but two much better years in 2009-10 assisted by the increase of Arab owned 2yos and more expensively purchased. Still has oddities about how he goes about things but he does front-load and May the month when the better ones would start. Behind schedule at present with only two runners and both owned by him. Which means a batch of better ones from the Arab owners should be coming along. Crowning Star supported and muscled up well from debut and supported. Ran like he needed the run though and perhps better over 6f. Trainer's record with long breaks to STO is moderate to poor and below his usual SR. Overall, the Brocklesby this year was a low level race and the front of it already struggling to convert their precocity advantage 6 weeks later. But, CS different in having the scope to develop further. Disappointing here but should conitnue to improve. Trainer has a record of taking time to develop these types and they can continue to improve in later season after a number of runs. Sea Odyssey allowed to use his 'abundant speed' again here having faded on debut when front-running and then produced a so-so effort off a Stalking run STO. Back to the 'Magic City' debate about using the natural pace over trying to hold a horse up. Sea Odyssey doesn't appear to stay 5f yet blazing along (and hassled here) and has not demonstrated he can produce a finish when Stalking (although muddied by racing wide at Chester with more Hills' twins lack of creative thinking). Trainer usually fixes this type in later season and they can develop well. But, on the evidence so far an OR78-82 one and not able to produce a full race yet. See how he develops and watch for hints he migth be improving to OR85+ and putting a string of races together. |
