£10k Bonus Race. GF with around 18mm of rain 10 days before and 5mm over preceding weekend. Going Stick reading at 8.2 but that taken two days before the Meeting = [Check For Update = final reading in archive at 8.4]. Stalls on Stands' Side of Outer Course. Medium Breeze as mostly a Headwind (slightly from the right). Hannon on his website the day before the race = "we have been waiting for the six furlong races for Eureka. He is a big Kheleyf colt owned by the Noodles Racing team, and he looks a nice horse at home." Hannon website after the race = "Richard Hughes booted home the first two winners at Nottingham, and he confessed that he was amazed at the 16-1 starting price of Eureka. He said: 'We think a lot of Eureka, and I could not believe the odds. He travelled the best horse in the race, but I never like to hit the front too soon, especially on a first-time out two-year-old, and it was only when I gave him a dig close home that we got there. I had to bob and weave a bit to ensure I was with the pace horses, but it all worked out well in the end. However, Eureka might be too babyish for Royal Ascot. It comes so quick, and you can mess a two-year-old up by taking one there who was not quite ready mentally." Barry Hills on his website news for w/b 16th May = "Brimstone Hill missed the break on his debut and was never competitive. He also found the ground too lively so Robert looked after him. He's going well on the gallops and hopefully can leave that run behind." Picture of the field spread on Stands' Side to centre track. Picture of the first three duelling in the last half furlong. Race played out like an average page, at most, with the field wide spread across the track. Race then turned into a 2F+ extended effort and a the amount of fading and distances back from the placed horses needs a little explaining given the overall pace. At halfway the first 9 through were within just 2L of the lead with ONCat at 3.5L and DGuru a bit adrift around 8L back of the lead. Caledonian Spring wound the pace at 2F+ out and able to maintain his effort mostly to the line. Firstly saw off BH (0.5L off lead at halfway) & Universal (2L back and made his effort early by 2f out and got to close to challenge for lead) by 1F out. Two had been sitting directly behind the leading line and travelling well and with Eureka settled and Burwaaz free at times. The progress these two made to challenge Caledonian Spring in the last 1f seemed typical of the jockeys. Hughes sitting still allowing the 2F to 1F out efforts to unravel and able to creep forward and be just over 1L back towards the final 1F and then finally ask for his effort. Strong effort inside 1F to move up to the leading pair and duel to the line. Meanwhile R. Hills was blundering about between 2F out to 1F out looking for a gap switching one way then hampering ONCat as he switched back to another gap. Then made his effort earlier to engage CSpring first for the final 3-way duel to the line. Mixed group of shapes and sizes but an overall impression of a 7f+ group rather than a set of 6f sprinters. Some who looked solid OR80s handicappers without looking better class but it can be difficult to spot those that can go to higher level. But overall a different set of types than the fields of early precosious ones. Eureka a solid size and not the full sprinter build. Wouldn't necessarily have been picked out as the best type and definitely not the readiest for the day. A young attitude and a bit clingy with the handler and that would fit with the Hannon's too-babyish for Royal Ascot quote. Clearly perked up in the race and much more competitive and willing than the pre-race demeanour would suggest. Produced a strong effort and should stay further and improve for it. A good prospect to develop and probably get rated OR90+ and see how he develops. Need to bulk up more to think he can go to real Group class. Another positive for sire Kheleyf in a good start to his 4th year with runners. This year should be better overall than the last two as he should have been sent better mares after his good FS in 2008. Caledonian Spring another taller type and rangier and look smore a 7f+ developer. Perhaps not typical of his neatly made sire. Ran well here and did best of the pace and responded well to two stalkers. Looks a solid OR80s handicapper. Burwaaz talked up as the best of the 2yos the trainer has ready and a possible for Royal Ascot. Trainer had a good second place the previous day with his earliest runner. A bit bulkier than the other two and perhaps a bit shorter. A bit green and wary in the prelims and following his stablemate about. This seems to show up a little in the picture of he three-way finish. Mostly fit for the day and both Dunlops runners in good condition overall. Not helped by his greenness nor the Hills indecision in the race. Did enough to think he is OR90+ without looking obviously better one. Morning punt on Universal suggested he had been working well. But, another Medium one lacking some build but an athletic mover which presumably makes him look smooth in training. But, you wish more, some?, of these Godolphin purchases were bigger and more robust types. Too much time chasing, safe answer, pedigrees at the sales and not enough looking at the horses. If you chase pedigrees the odds say you are likely to buy the less good one than the pedigree 'maker'. Try looking for the 'pedigree making' one before it happens rather than chasing. Very fit and fizzy for the day and added being mentally green to it. Unfocussed, childish liveliness at times. Ran better than the final result using his movement to make a swift forward effort to be the first challenger before a late fade. Ok as an OR80+ type but hard to think he is better class or even a 'Roayh''. Looking at his readiness and attitude here worth recording how the Zarooni 2yos developed in 2010 in his first season. This can be summarised by "Moderate to Poor Record with 3TO+ runs until Sep29+ & 5-10 after." A working hypothesis would be that in his first season he fell into the regular trap for SheikhMo trainers with 2yos (perhaps overall). This meant the runners were close to best FTO and showed little progression in [Est] unless FTO rating held down for some reason. The follow-on problem was that the runners' form seemed to tail off quickly and 3TO+ produced poor records (with one Oct caveat). Looking at Universal here you wouldn't bet on him peaking STO when he is less green and sees the race out then all that fitness, fizz and energy leak away 3TO. Brimstone Hill 50/1 despite the quotes from the Hills' website that nothing much went wrong on debut that was not fixable. More of a medium sprinter shape than some of the rangier 7f types and short of Open Maiden class. Bustled into the race to get him to compete and ran having been a bit free early on. The type the stable would bring along as a nursery project unless they perceive he has improved enough before to go to a weaker nothern maiden. Should be competitive leaking into the OR70s with development. Sire One Cool Cat gets taller, narrower, types considering he was a srpinter BUT One New Cat untypical and a smaller, solid one. In good condition bet not mentally ready. Related to a set of precocious 5f sprinters and he looks a solid usable type at a lower level. Back to the lengthy and rangier 7f+ types with Bling King and shorter and pretty lengthy shape. But enough power and moves well with it. Ought to be a solid OR70s 7f+ developer for nurseries. Ran poorly here and fading early. One possible reason would be the notable effort he made from 3R early on, along with Yammos, to get to less than a length off the lead at halfway. Another reason might be the fizziness he showed in the prelims. In very good condition but this seemed to have got him too lively (Picture A & B). Back to the smaller ones with Yammos and presumably these small, neat, ones typical of what FSS Sir Percy will give us. Neat enough but small. Green here and made the same move in early race as BKing and faded. Not Open maiden class but balanced enough to run a lot and find his level in handicaps. Something entirely different next with Dishy Guru a big, very lengthy and narrow bodied one. Not a pleasing shape and will need 7f+ to use his range on and lacking power. Angular and raw but on the plus side is the size and he carried himself well enough. Trainer usually runs the usable ones he has early so this must be it (or one of them) and that believable. Too slow here but should be able to develop to compete over 7F+ in nurseries or auctions (unless attracting No Bid means he cannot run in those). Hyperlink another indistinguishable Mark Johnston medium type. Lengthy and up behind and green overall. Runs too freely and fades. Hard to judge where he fits but not obvious Open Maiden class. Lucifers Shadow mildly talked up by his trainer but not a taking type. Some build positive but will need to develop very well to win. Weak in front and a poor mover. |
