SUMMARY
Going Stick from Fri = [UPDATE]. Medium to Stiff Easterly Wind = Three-Quarter Tailwind from the Right in the Straight.

Fahey on his Sporting Life blog = "Euxton Hall goes for the Woodcote Stakes and I presume he's the one they've all got to beat, I just hope he handles the track. You don't know until you try and run there but we feel that he'll handle it well. He was very impressive first time out and the second has won by six lengths at Windsor since. He did everything really professionally first time but a run always does them good and he'll improve plenty for that. I'm happy with him. He's a cracking horse."

Channon on his website after the race = "I'm chuffed to bits Firstly, this is a very talented colt who is eager to please with plenty of scope. Martin said that he was never happy coming down the hill and Tattenham Corner saw him swing very wide. That said, he had the ability to travel up with the leaders and although he only scrambled home, he's such a good actioned horse he managed to battle on - he's a real competitor - that was the key. He's in the Chesham and I think he'll relish stepping up to seven furlongs - that's the plan right now." Comment on his bunch of Sixties Icon 2yos = "I've not forced these two year olds to be early - you can't do that. They are just great movers with super attitudes and they want to get on with it. You can't train them to have speed and you can't train them to be precocious. I've six in the paddocks that need time, so it looks like we might have a bit of fun at the back end over seven furlongs to a mile as well."

Fast Time but not a Juvenile course record. No faster time since start 2002 season. Typical times for this race between 69.0s to 69.5s. Fastest time in last 10 years was 68.89s in 2004 by an OR83 rated Nursery winner. But, very fast conditions on the day with usually firmer going, the rail in and an unusual stiff tailwind. The 5f Dash won in a very fast 53.69s by an OR90s 4yo and getting very close to the, hand-timed, historcal mark set by Indigenous a lifetime ago which had always seemed out-of-reach and 'suspect' given the timing method used. Race developed into a duel between the 3 who handled the track and stayed 6f. Last two home plus Euxton Hall failed to hadle the downhill to various degrees.

Chilworth Ico did handle the track perfectly well despite the Channon quote. He didn't get unbalanced on the turn to the straight and instead speeded up a little relative to the leaders and close to joining them Less than a Length off the lead through halfway which is close to the top of the straight. CIcon a smaller and neatly made, ready type. Does not appeal as one to develop and this his top level. But, most interesting to look back at his previous runs where he has shown something a little 'different' at times and that came together here. If you prefer bigger horses then the tendency is to look for other reasons for the apparent difference.

A slow start on debut and got well adrift and not hard to dismiss the way he got onto the back of the group in the straight with the jockey doing nothing. STO the striking thing he showed was how well he travelled in 2R and looked the winner from early on. But, that was Bath and the leaders went too hard and are barely Open Maiden level. Harder to dismiss what he did 3TO when a slow start got him well behind. The striking thing in that race was how he made real efforts at 3 separate points and still wasn't stopping at the finish having run the 2nd half of that fast 5F event quicker than the winner. A slow start got him behind again there but he made up 3-4L comfortably to get back onto the group early on the bend. He then produced the best effort at 2F out. He then still managed a small response late on to not be stopping at the line. Any one of the first two efforts would typically be all there was. That ability to travel behind a pace and then produce an extended effort played out here. Got into a duel early in the straight with Liber here and had finally got the better of that when Heavy Metal arrived having clawed back 2L+ over the straight. CIcon able to respond again and battle that one to the line. Clearly has something different in his basic pace and the extended effort he can make. Also a total trier. But, size must catch up with him against better opponents.

Good effort by Heavy Metal being 3L back at halfway and running away fromt he rail in the straight. Getting back 3L on any worthwhile opponents on a fast, downhill track with a tailwind takes some doing. Still seems to be improving but another who seems likely to come up short in Group level unless he can improve further physically.

Trainer Prescott has a 2-9 record in Listed races since 2005 with 4 others placed. His record in Group races is 4-16 with 5 places. He doesn't run 2yos in Class 1 races without some reason. Liber a deep bodied, compact and chunky type. More complete than his build would suggest. His 'form' did not seem to warrant a run here but the trainer proved right again. See how high the trainer pitches him NTO. More likely to be Condition level? Worth looking back at his first two runs. Why did he take so long to haul himself past Hellolini FTO? This sort of quality one should have won FTO for the trainer and that defeat made him look less good. Despite the sire 'record' he seems to have proved better on firmer going and perhaps just a slow learner that needed 6f. This effort makes you wonder whether Pastoral Prey is a bit better than his rating having chased Liber hard LTO? Perhaps let that thought go.

Euxton Hall did not handle the downhill part and 5-6L back into the straight. Able to raise some effort in the straight and make some ground back but then a late fade or eased. Made less ground back than HM for example. A niggle that his debut run was so professional that he might have less progression from that than it appeared. Smaller type but well built and trainer positiveness seems real. But, this run took Fahey's record in Listed races since 2005 to 4-43 with 11 places and he has not won a Group race in 41 goes so EH probably needs to be better than he hinted at here in his effort in the straight to improve those records.

Lastchancelucas a smaller one that handled the track fine but blown away by the bigger types 2F out and appearing not to stay 6f. Nursery type and helps to put the quality of his York novice win into perspective.

Scotland Forever made his debut over 7f in May in Ireland and did a lot wrong. Pulled fiercely, ran wide and then Veered Left in he last 2F. Some size positive but a raw hooligan. That view not helped by an enormous scuff on his hind-quarters here. No a horse who takes much notice of others or his surroundings. Similar wildness in the first half of the race here to be around 12L adrift at halfway. Some response in the straight to again hint there might be a racehorse in there somewhere.

Surely Speightful a slow start with the Spencer trademark then not handling the track and not helped by Spencer reacting to everything and amplifying it rather than trying to act as a damper and organise the horse. Presumably will be back on a faster, flat track NTO.
