Abrupt weather change on the day. Previous week had seen temperatures into the 20s Celcius and this day barely up to 10 degrees with a medium NNE wind = crosswind out from the stands. Watering of 10mm twice in preceding fortnight and 3mm on the straight the day before the race. Going Stick figure with the note of 'Caution' from the Clerk of the Course because the track has been verti-drained 3 weeks before = bashed with metal spikes (of some shape) dragged behind tractor to loosen the surface and provide better aeration and drainage. Presumably this affects the Going Stick reading until the track tightens up again. But why treat the figure with caution? Why not just trust the Going Stick figure as a reflection of how tight and responsive the track is? Brocklesby Pre-Race Questions Doc. Field raced along Stands' Side Strip but wide enough spread (say 10-12 lanes) to allow no difficulties in running. JPA set pace next to rail attended by Lady Poppy who broke best and tracked over to join JPA. HMetal a typical Johnston free-runner wide out and typical fold. DBlue losing ground soon after halfway. Halfway positions to final placings suggest the pace a bit too strong without looking like a 'war'. First 4 through halfway spread and within 1L of each other with Mayfield Girl 2R behind them at 1.5L. Well Acquainted settled 3L off lead on outside and on the sheltered side away from the wind with LLodge & PWords just behind. Gap of 4L+ back to Maypole Joe who lost ground through being green or unable to go pace and My Boy Bill who was settled in 2R early. MBBill could have gone the pace but the jockey allowed him to drop back as the peleton pressed on. MBB probably 8-9L back of lead at halfway. Worth thinking about that halfway structure when considering the final result. How much would you upgrade JPA and Mayfield Girl for doing best of those close to the pace? How much did the front of the field folding back assist WAcquainted & MBBill to close up to and past the others? MBBill seemed to make ground comfortably without being asked much so clearly was doing a lot more, in quality terms, than just beating up on tired opponents. In 'Changeover Point' terms you then would question how much LLodge & Perfect Words achieved in making only a bit of ground from halfway against the faders while the first two home achieved more. Is JPA a OR70-5 type and those behind needing valid excuses to be open maiden winner quality, for example? LL & PW not convincing profiles as being in front of the Changeover Point. There was probably more than one horse better than that pair that finished behind them. Jockey change on JPAndover from 7lbs Apprentice to Dane O'Neill late on. Marvelino talked up by Eddery when interviewed on ATR early in the week. As with the Osborne 2yo noted below outlets such as Twitter seemed an ideal vehicle to cut out any worthwhile thinking (perhaps 140 chars does that) and just pass around the 'Bull in an exponential game of Chinese Whispers. Grisly. Jamie Osborne on a small message service on Mar 30th in response to jockeys Kelly & Mayor getting excited about Deepest Blue = "Let's not get carried away here kiddies. He is a nice colt but will be green and need a run" Typically cliche ridden quote but an interesting example because Twitter seemed a specialised tool for puffing up some positive words from a work rider and a trainer into a runaway feeling that this one was something special. Bloodstock agent chipping in and so on. Picture of Emperor's Daughter from Tim Pitt us of the small message service and shows ED on near side working with 3yo filly Sonko. Report regarding My Boy Bill post-race = "Mick Easterby's reaction after winning the Brocklesby Conditions Stakes with My Boy Bill (7-1) was not one of a happy man. The octogenarian had told the owners not to back the gelding, despite being the most expensive in the field, as he did not think he would be forward enough. Given a patient ride by Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey Paddy Aspell, he won going away by half a length. With Easterby unwilling to speak, it was left to his son David to elaborate. Easterby jnr said: "We had a big discussion whether to run or not as we like him a lot, but Brocklesby winners rarely progress through the season and the rest of his family turned slightly shifty. It could do him more harm than good. We came here for a hands and heels introduction but he obviously has so much ability. We also came here for the nice ground. Mick's upset because we told the owner we didn't think he'd win.'" Which matches with the way MBB was ridden with the jockey initially getting him moving in 2R but then letting him drift off the back without much activity. With a strong, contested, pace the jockey then found MBB closing up to the stallers & faders and switched him to centre track to lead late on. |
