Rocky Ground 6th runner of season for trainer Varian and the 4th FTO win. Either he has a good group or has fixed his fine tuning from his first season in 2011 with lots of early places. Meanwhile the reverse with trainer Botti who did very ready debuts when he first started training Britain but has backed off notably in the last 4 seasons. FTO wins now very rare and seem to either need very useful ones in early season or the odd better prepared one in late season. But, Echo Of Silence his 12th runner of the season and the 6th to place but no wins. The debuts are clearly ok to run solidly but short of being able to win on 'tuning' alone. Still the odd punt (3 of 12 so far) noted on his debuts although these do not seem to indicate really high class ones. Mixed race on Profile but with a good set of four newcomers and a tail of lesser ones from stables who come to YARM often. Shape of result looks absolutely 'Right' with 4 x strong newcomers int he first four places and the two trainer swho get regular FTO wins in 1st & 2nd. Put the Changeover Point behind them and Santo Prince the possible OR60s usable one then a Garbage Gap behind him with the STO lesser one in 6th and the 6-10th in SP order. Only real question about those behind GGap is what quality The Obvious Choice actually is? Rocky Ground called a '2yo Type' by his trainer and just a smaller medium size and 'complete' already. Typical for the trainer this year also very competent and able to go clear off an average pace without making a full effort. OR80+ but a niggle over how far he can go in size and had no greenery to fix here. A Certain Romance bigger than RG and flashier and more length. But a rangy mover nad hard to judge at times whether the jockey was holding him up from running freely or nudging him as he was getting unbalanced. Either way the rangy movement seemed to be not fully controlled and a high action in front as if held. A solid effort given the lack of balance and left impression he could do much better if able to run less green and put his full power down. Trainer had say he was a 'May' 2yo which seems to mean he could be one of the better ones that win FTO for him. He had two late May into June FTO wins this year who have run very well STO since. Was this one held up. Echo Of Silence expensive at the Frehcn breeze sale at Deauville. By a fast 5f 2yo sire in France. A good size but not ready enough to run a full out or fully competent race. Probably typical of the develop with racing style of Botti now. Probably OR80+ and should improve well. Bartack a usable 2yo on trainer nmethods but is he a Maiden winner (who should show up well FTO then win STO) or an 8f Nursery development project. Difficult to judge on this effort which did not go like a strong Maiden winner prospect. But jockey dropped his whip towards 2f out just as he looked a sif he was interested in asking for a real effort rather than just letting an Educ Intro happen. Horse lost 1-2L waiting for jockey to get organised then jus plugging on but not being asked by the jockey. Santo Prince a nursery type on 3TO and jockey Turner blatantly did not bother to put him in the race to protect his OR. Trainer Stuart Williams not that interested in 2yo races and just the odd winners nowadays. But The Obvious Choice the 3rd runner this year for either one of the Qatar based owner set-ups and 2 have been expensive. While other trainers ahve been going for FTO wins and places with the owners' horses he carries on getting anonymous debuts. Has he been givent he duff ones or has he convinced them they will get better value by developing horses to maximise their handicap careers if they are not going to be high class 2yos? TOC never put in the race here and clearly just an Educ Intro for the future. Whitford and ok size but ran too freely and movement not that good as a negative. Like'it first runner of season for Tompkins who always had low SRs and a moderate to poor 2yo record and 2010-11 worse with 1 winner from 31 individuals. This one looked a small and limited one got out early because of no scope. |
