Going GSS having been SGS two days before with mostly dry weather in-between but course reporting 4.5mm overnight before Race Day. Going Stick reading from 06:30am. Track at full width with no Railing Out. Note that Folkestone were due to race on the same day but that meeting was Abandoned, as was Leicester. Further light rain forecast, at times, through the Race Day with a Light Wind swinging around from NE to S during the afternoon. Likely to be mostly a Headwind in the Home Straight by Race Time. Main Field came over to the Stands' Rail at the usual point downhill around halfway. Jockey on Ladweb made a concious decision to go alone down the Far Rail. Turner second string Captain Blue a little adrift after a slow start and running green and would have had to cross over alone so jockey seemed to decide to just stay where he was towards the far side and trundle home there. 1.3s faster than earlier race at Course this season on Soft where field also came to the stands side. Shape of race and the final placings make good sesnse and seem to tell an understandable story. Heavy Metal some sort of solid OR70s type and allowed a comfortable lead here on an average pace and a regulation win. More mature and raced more competently than he had FTO. Second win for a Brocklesby runner in 2 days and more interesting to look back to that race in light of this win. In general, and factoring in Bill Turner's recent comments, the summary on the day seems to stand up. But is a bit more detailed than the 'Form working/not working out' digital view that the media wants. The pace was too strong a contested in the Brocklesby which broke up the leaders early and the closers did best with the winner held up off the back of the field at Halfway to confirm that view. The first three home are Open Maiden+ quality and the 2nd - Well Acquainted - ran just about ok STO in a race on bad ground but can show more. The 3rd home - Mayfield Girl - ran badly on very soft ground STO and is declared to run in 2 days time at Thirsk and will hopefully confirm the Doncaster upside view of her. The 4th home - JPAndover - has won an Auction race which semed about the OR70 level he hinted at. The 5-6th home had the advantage of missing the pace and seemed to not close up enough and below Open Maiden level. One of those has been beaten a lot since, including in a seller and the other - Lucky Lodge - is probably competitive OR60s and like her stablemate Mayfield Girl, better than the blow-out at Beverley STO suggests. Mixed in behind that midfield were horses of better potential who underperformed. Heavy Metal ran better than his 8th suggested since he chased the pace, made a real forward effort and was 4th intot he last 1F before the typical fade and hang left of a Johnston early debut. Remove that and you get the competent display here. Marvelino was in the ruck having chased the pace and ran a good second STO in one of the most productive maidens run so far. Presumably Deepest Blue has more to show as well. Still the chance for the Brocklesby to work out as an 'Ok' if not vintage edition and especially if My Boy Bill can compete at higher level. Lady Phill another to be much more competent STO although still a bit green at times. She is a good size but seems to be built very straight in front and carried her head up because of that. She took time to get going 2F out because of being green and the straightness in front seems to stop her stretching out fully. Even so she came clear with HM and is OR70+ and will win. Further promise from Fiducia and another filly of ok size. Still mentally young and ran too freely here with the jockey trying to get her to settle in midfiled. Still travelling ok into the last 2F but less forward go than was promised and then a fade presumably helped by the fade. Perhaps mid to later OR60s and can develop further. Must Be Me a smaller filly and not one to follow. Started hanging left as soon as asked to make her effort. Ladweb of no interest. Golac has packed it in to various degrees in both his races before and shown that was likely in his gallops work. More of the same here as travelling with HM at halfway but then started losing ground as soon as asked to make an effort and last in his group by 1.5F out. Mental of physical problem? Here he packed it in so completely the jockey was trying to pull him up from before 1F out and seemed to be looking down. Check for a WTRB report. UPDATE = WTRB from racecourse Vet saying the horse had struck into himself. No details on how bad this cut was or where on the leg. Golac declared for a race on Monday 2 days after this one so presumably the sut was just superficial. |
