£10k Bonus Race. GSG from S two days before. Going Stick reading from 10:00am on race day. Medium ENE Wind = Three-quarter Tailwind from the right. Field raced Stands' Rail side. Whole field within 3L of the lead at Halfway. Pace looked just average but seemed strong enough to spread the field by ability at the finish. But, quite a strong race on profile and the Changeover Point probably behind TINice and Bispham Green debatable over which side he faills. Yes Two just the wrong price at 16/1 even if you had never seen him. Trainer Millman has metamorphosed from a 'Very Ready FTO' trainer 5+ years ago into a 'Clueless Debut' and then Snap Together STO one. He has turned in a profit supporting all his STOs in each of the last 3 seasons although the profits have relied on longer SPs for a small number of winners. But, those winners usually amongst the earlier debuts over 5f. Which would mean you would be interested in Yes Two just on circumstantials. When he is a good size, if lacking a bit of build and ran a strong debut by trainer standards (in a NOTT novice race he has run close to his best in for 10+ years) and finishing the race off strongly 16/1 is unbelievable. Drew clear off the average pace with Dust Whirl who is another who has an OR85+ profile and that as the front of the race makes sense. Regal Dan (see trainer quote below) is another horse that seems easy to characterise just on trainer MO. He is the OR81-4 medium sprinter that the stable has run in early season for years and their careers tend to follow the same path (see Eye Spy Early article). Made a real forward move at 2F out after jockey M Hills had typically got him behind. Looks spot-on as the profile type. They tend to need a bit of time to win then improve again in later season when you though you had them 'fixed'. Which feels like a solid framework to judge Top Boy by. An expensive purchase for a smaller yard who struggles to get 2yo winners. On circumstantials of the name and the early debut for the trainer you would think they thought something of him. Another to make a debut at NOTT and a clueless yobbo in the prelims and veered around at the start before running too freely then fading in the race. But a good size and strength if the trainer could train him adequately. Bigger and more powerful than Regal Dan for example. The job for the jockey here seemed to be to teach him to settle and he was anchoed at the back with some bouts of FFH. Had to wait for a gap at 2F out and still 6th towards 1F out when the jockey asked him to produce his effort. Which looked good and making up real ground and not just plugging on into faders. Another OR80+ one and this a real step forward in attitude and competence from debut. Can he continue that? This Is Nice another of those slightly tall and a bit narrow bodied ones for sire Exceed And Excel which end up OR70s and do not really progress. A lot of those zippy 5F types that end up struggling in nurseries after an early season win. TIN perhaps a bit more interesting and ran green here and hanging a bit in centre track at times. But, out of a stouter dam and seemed to be staying on well at the finish. Seemed ok as OR75+. Anonymous debut from Bispham Green and a bit green but just a so-so to ok effort in later race before a fade. Perhaps not a full Garbage Gap in a £10k race where even the worst might be OR60s usable types. Ought to be the odd winner behind and the green Hitherto perhaps top of the list of possibles. Ouzinkie not travelling well by halfway and no explanation emerged for the fade. But, smaller type in group overall. Charlie Hills on May 7th in his weekly update = "Nothing went right for Regal Dan on Saturday evening. He missed the break, had to make up a lot of ground mid race and just faded at the end. The ground was softer than we had anticipated and his action suggests he really needs a sound surface." Having M. Hills as the jockey is not going to help a get a solid start. |
