SUMMARY
SGS from GSG 2 days before the race day. Light rain forecast during the racing. Going Stick reading from 07:00am on the day. Light to Medium NE Wind = Crosswind from Left for first 2F, Headwind for 1.5F on top turn then a Crosswind from the right in the Home Straight. But, whole course in a natural bowl.

Heavy rain before and during race. Race delayed for a period while one of the Ambulances that had got bogged down on the infield grass car-park was pushed out. C4 & RUK used most of that extra time to watch this process take place rather than show the horses.

Rails at full Width which means this race really is 5F and 16yards (1,116yds).

Race sponsored by Manor House Stables and hence the 5 x Dascombe entries. The 3 that ran finished in the last 3 places including Pippy as the first horse owned by Wayne Rooney. He must have enjoyed watching that £60k purchase flopping around at the back like a Sunday Park Footballer.

Only AFC, JPA and TLady seemed to handle the conditions at all and these three clear at halfway. Baddilini travelled ok for 1F but then started to slip around and dropped well back looking uncomfortable. Only got to a volunteer 3rd by plugging on better than the other 4 adrift and getting into the least able of the prominent stallers/faders by the finish.

Some interesting snippets from C4 pundits. Halifax Jim McGrath actually said something useful wrt Tharawal Lady. Said he had backed her in the morning having not seen her before and was worried having seen her before this race. Saying she was 'on edge' but also small, lightly made and there were others with more scope. Looking back to the Division of the Beverley auction race TL won it seems she won the much weaker of the two. The first division has already produced three subsequent winners and a good later effort by the 2nd placer. More of that Jim and less of the 'Nice Type' stuff. Emma Spencer then balancing things by not bothering to check facts. Said that the draw was all important in the race and no winner had been drawn wider than 5 in the last 10 years. Stop there and that is fair comment. But then said that although there were 5 NRs here the race 'normally had a full 14 runner field'. You are guessing lass. The previous 3 years had 9-8-7 runners and it was odds-on two days ago that with 14 declared there would be at least 3 NRs and 4 probably Evens. Ended up with 5 NRs from 5 of the 6 widest draws which would be close to what you might predict. RUK did essentially the same thing by using the same fact about the draws with a 'much bigger field than normal caption'.

All Fur Coat a balanced and ready 2yo with a willing attitude. On toes AP but under control. Settled in the lead and the only runner in the race to run the rail properly. Did produce a real effort at the top of the straight but fading late on. Lacking scope and an OR70s type. How much would you want ot support her off OR85 in later season, for example? The race has produced Listed race winners in each of the last 3 years but of different types. One of those Primo Lady who couldn't win this but won the Marygate Stakes later in the month. That filly now a 4yo rated OR75 and her trainer struggling to find a buyer. AFC something in that mould and, in theory, not 'Listed Class'. But that phrase is meaningless in some ways since many listed races ae won with OR70-80s efforts. Vulnerable to a bigger filly, Baileys Jubilee would run away from her and is real 'Class', but if AFC got loose on the far rail at Yoek on bad ground against similar types she could end up a 'soft' (in several ways) Listed race winner.

Just Past Andover another OR70s type and Fallon ridden here. Had not finished his race off twice when pestered for the lead but won LTO when allowed to run unhassled along the best strip of ground. Fallon ried to settle him on the rail behind AFC here but failed to hold him after 1F and the horse pulled around the outside of AFC. Ran Lane 1 or worse after that so running further than AFC and not settled an under control. Unable to match AFC kick at 1.5F out and fading again late. Another Nursery type for whom this was his 'Olympics'.

Baddlini the horse you come to when looking for a horse with scope and should prove to be the highest OR at season end unless, say, Deauville Prince develops over further. Has shown hints of the same immaturity in all three runs and hard to define what the problem is. Running here because the trainer has to have Chester runners but you feel the horse needs a development plan rather than lots of runs on completely different surfaces and bend types. His debut run over-rated to some level and he travelled well nut then took time to get going after a mid race 'lull' - either lacking pace, concentration (immaturity) or both. Travelled ok in a fast race STO but unable to find an immediate kick and then not quite seeing the 5f out as is he had been dragged along too fast. Showing signs of petulance and immaturity (head throwing and stamping) SP here and similar race shape. Got going reasonably well from a wide draw and then lost concentration and balance, or whatever, after 1.5F and dropping back. No real response 2F out when still on the bend and perhaps 10L adrift when the 1.5F straight come ins. Beaten 4L at the finish and had put 2-3L into the other Closers and seemed to be going the best he had been at the finish. Biggest in the field. Needs to grow up mentally and the trainer needs to find what really suits him and work on that. Is he a good 6-7f horse competing in early 5F on ability rather than natural aptitude, for example?

Tharawal Lady won a weak race FTO and other than a slow start ran a mostly competent race here. A bit of head to one side and offering to hang at times. Outgunned by the first two and earlier fade. Not real OR70 in long term.

Blue Clumber given an attacking ride to get prominent fom wide but then carried out by JPA after 1.5F and never really balanced after being held back to drop in. Lower OR60s level.

Pippy the Dascombe 1st string on jockeys but perhaps that the Rooney effect. Smaller, compact and ready sprinter. Looked just ok on a straight bit of Ploytrack on his sales breeze-up. Too green to compete here and seemed to find soft ground and a bend beyond him at present. Doesn't look the wisest use of £60k unless faster conditions and some nous make him the ready sprinter he needs to be quite quickly.

A bit more interest in Deauville Prince who showed as much here and more scope to develop.
