Race 1

Trainer Baker in his blog = "And Sutton Sid up at Nottingham [sic]. Very disappointing, especially as the form of his debut second at Lingfield had been franked [eh?, Opt Out who he finished with has been belted since. The winner sho beat SSid comfortably has won a similar race since. No 'franking' going on. Is this the level of thinking professional trainers work to? Should be a TV pundit part-time.]. We will back right off Sid now. Give him a proper break and freshen him up for midsummer and late season targets. He remains a horse of great potential, and I know that we will in time be able to put a line through last night's poor showing...."

Interesting group but best to read the result as Two Separate Races with Smoothtalkinrascal in one Race on his own and the others in another. Two reasons for this and one is that SMRascal the best horse. But, he also raced down the Stands' Rail for much of the race and most of the field racing wider and ALL of them in a group off the rail in the 2.5F. Since SMR pressed the pace on after 2F he effectively put enough pressure on the others, who were probably racing on slightly worse ground, to break that group up early. Ignore SMR and look at the Halfway positions to final placings of the others and it shows that the group turned itself 'inside out' from front to back by the finish. The four prominent racers from the wider out group in 4 of the last 5 places home and the 2nd-5th placed home an orderly promotion through those faders in the order they were at halfway. The Changeover Point is between the 3rd and 4th home and the Garbage Gap behind the 5th.

Smoothtalkinrascal an early 5f runner for his trainer who has few of those these days. The odd ones he has are a mix of high class ones and some duff ones. SMR is clearly the natural and better class one who got going early because he could already perform to a high level. Shorter type but strongly built and with a bit more length than the typical compact ones by the sire. Also notable for a very self-contained attitude and lets nothing bother him and quietly gets on with his job. Travellling so well after 2F the jockey let him stride into the lead and he just pulled away and never tested and can clearly rate higher. Part of the distance a bias effect but a serious prospect. Perhaps lacks scope to develop into the season but ought to win at Listed level and place at Group level through mid-season.

Forray a likeable bigger and strong type of his sire. Ought to rate OR85 and a bit. Took off with his jockey FTO so the job was to get him to settle here. Hauled back in centre track at the start and foungt his jockey until 2F had gone. Solid effort when asked to progress and not on the best ground. Still needs to settle but left the impression he can show up better on a faster 5f if he can calm down.

Ceelo a different physical type to the other two being tall and narrower and lacking some build. Very green in the prelims and a bit slow to catch on in the race. Also notably fit FTO partly because of his light build. Got behind but plugged on well enough through the faders. Perhaps not real 5f and OR80ish. Fitness FTO perhaps means less progression than Hannon typical STO but ought to win at Open maiden level.

Lincolnrose a balanced filly with some strength positive and a fluent enough mover. Got to an unthreatening, Volunteer 4th, by being off the pace and plugging on past the faders. Some sort of OR60s usable? Might leak into OR70s?

Wrightington more interesting as a 'Development Project'. A bit on the smaller side but sturdy build if just an ok mover. Mentally very young here and not that fit. Very slow break near the rail and got well behind then switched off the better rail to race in centre track. Closing up to go through the faders and got hampered there or would have been 4th. Look through Fahey's FRAGs by SP and winners do develop from all SP ranges so 22/1 here not a showstopper. Probably not 5f and perhaps a nursery development type but should carry on improving and get intot he OR70s.

Ouzinkie's debut run which looked so promising was over-rated but even so he has run two bad races since and not really picked up in the last 2F. Tired and rolling around by 1F out here. Leggy, compact with it and a bit narrow. Possible for OR70 but looked a 'Thinker' at present.

Dream Ally a short tubby one of the sire but not that well made and a moderate mover. Looks a poor use of 55k.

Sutton Side looked like a big dog as a 1yo but talked up by his trainer and zippy. Debut run looks moderate form and another early fader here although still freen at times through the race. Still a bit small and 'Toy' and is the trainer talking him up because of what he cost? Looked OR60s and see what he looks like when he returns.

Setfiretotherain another smaller one like Sid but with more substance although not that fit here. Ran too freely with the A3 and a grisly fade. Another OR60s development for nurseries perhaps.
