11DegC. Medium- SSE Wind = 1/4 Tailwind from Right HS. Grim Fascination time as Derrick Shaw finally trains another 2yo winner, in an appalling quality nursery, granted, Only one previous winner in the 13 horses and she is a small filly who seems on a one-way journey to Palookaville after showing early season OR70 form. Limegrove open favourite but drifting and packed it in after about 25yds here. Meanwhile back with trainer Shaw why wouldn't someone have sent owner Brian Johnson a message by now saying they guarantee they could supply four times better (Metrics to be agreed) results for half the outlay. Johnson has had 10 x individual 2yo runners with Shaw so far in 2013 for a record of 1 win and two places (one by this winner) from 33 runs. This win in a poor Nurs off OR53. If you managed that low level a return with a bunch of 'Bargain Bucket' yearlings it wouldn't be good. Going back to Limegrove then trainer David Evans has long been finding cheapo usable ones and winning races. Limegrove may look like she's 'finished' now but she has won 3 races and managed 4 places from 18 outings. Better than Shaw has managed with 10 horses. The real killer in this is when you look at the prices of the Johnson horses with Shaw. £62k for Ben's Boy (injured STO but running too freely and not looking well drilled), 50k for Dynamo Walt (a lot to win a Nurs 7TO off OR53), 42k for Kingsway Lad (unp all 3 starts & prob barely OR50), 40k for Argent Touch (unp all 3 starts and form level below Kingsway Lad, OR31), 38k for Caesars Gift (plcd once 4TO off OR58 but below that level performance), 30k for John Lea (unp all 4 runs and has OR37), £24k Day Star Lad (unp 2 runs mid season OR45, missing since), 18k Royal Bushida (unp all 3 runs, OR48), 15k Phoenix Angel (unp all 3 runs, OR20), £14k Dont Tell Nan (unp all 3 runs, OR42) Getting towards, or over?, £500k to buy and train that group to end 2yo. Give that money and buying spec to Hannon & Doyle and what would you get. Give that to David Evans and he'd get you umpteen winners and prob 2 at Conds to Listed level at 2yo. On the plus side Johnson did have OR100+ rated Top Boy with Shaw last year. But Shaw managed to win a single race with that one (a March 3yo WTON maiden) in 20 outings to date and his OR has plummeted to 77 in Oct as a 3yo. Godolphin level lack of Success and zero Accountability for those buying and preparing those runners. |
