S by race time with 4mm rain during the am. GSG from GGF on Decs. 1mm rain Sun & 6mm overnight. GStick 06:30am. Rail Out by ??yds from 4.5f out to 3.5f. Adds 6yds to Race Distance. 15DegC. Medium to Light SSE wind but due to flip over to NNW by end of afternoon. SSE around 1/2 Headwind from Left HS. Breeze by Approach The West just on the downside of Ave & not much to report. Smaller and SCp but ok Dp & PwrB if looking a bit Phys immat. SMY and moving bit around and raising head mid-Breeze. Looks short legged and lacking some ath. Runs straight and finishes breeze but at the one pace. Need to check if more mentally tuned here and how the development since Mid-April has gone. Field came Stands' Side downhill and Juan Alonso typically well ridden and alive to best place to be by a Hannon jk. Hughes went to lead when nothing else wanted to and allowed to control the race. Got across to rail which seemed an Adv. Horses just staying on. Hughes said afterwards JAlonso v lazy at home so they struggled to get him to the fitness levelt they wanted. Also said grabbing the rail important bec the horse lazy. Felt JA would stay any distance and the ground S rather than GSG. Others letting Hughes take the best track positions and pace and then try to race him away from rail. Looked a moderate bunch and JA 68-73 range in line with Hannon types usually brought here. Many smaller, IP to Cp, and SUnath ones in Pdk. Our Channel btr than ave IC and looked BgrIC & taller in race. Tv Best at times but ran a bit Fre then ended up racing away from rail and stalling a bit before running on again late. In line with his Brz and FT effort he isn't an efficient and Str runner when put under pressure. Prob the best hrs int his race but beaten by one the Hannons have hammered into shape. Trainer Tate created a Positive impression with his 2yos since getting licence for start 2011. Had 8 winners from 26 runners in 2011 and 7 of the 8 winners had run by Jul 13th and were 7 of his first 9 debuts. Only later winner won FTO on Oct 18th in 8.6f WTON race. 7 of the 8 winners made the first 5 places on debut and generally horses with some ability showed it FTO whatever the SP. Worth noting that his last 5 debuts (the ones in Oct/Nov) were all on AW and all made the first 4 incl the FTO win at 11/2. Watch for in 2012. Tate's 2012 record better overall and suggesting a better group of 2yos. But, laudably, the same patterns are showing up and suggesting he is an organized trainer and following a set pattern. This will be his 22nd FTO of the year and he already has 12 individual winners incl on FTO win. The front-loading has again showed up with 8 x FTOs by June 7 producing 7 winners and the exception was Blhadawa who ran a Listed+ future qual debut but has had physical problems & run on once since (after a break). The readiness for debut, but not wried tight, has shown up with 7 of the 8 making the first 6 places and the one exception 9th of 17 in a big, & very strong, field behind Blhadawa. That one has gone on to win 3 races up to Conds level. He then ran 3 x FTOs in mid June who made the first 6 FTO but not won. But still earlier than when his 'early' winners stopped debuting in 2011. That resolved with the next 3 debuts Jun 26 to Jul 13 finishing 3rd, 2nd & 2nd & all have won since with two looking useful. A couple of debuts on 15th & 19th July were 9th & 5th and have placed ab in later runs. Which suggests they were the tail end of his main 'early 2yo types'. A break then until Aug 28-29th with the first later debut 3rd and then won STO and the debut on Aug 29th won FTO at HTON (which feels like Channon/Prescott approach of going a long way with a useful one to get a win FTO to move on from). Next 3 FTOs to Sep4 produced a 8th, 2nd & 4th suggesting he still has some usable ones and thye show it FTO but rarely win (like a Michael Bell). Which poses the question of whether ATWest is a lesser one and one the front edge of the development types and 3yos types who have one run at 2yo. Or, is she the tail edge of his usable ones. A good question is where has she been since April when she, in theory, was close to being ready to run with the breeze prep. On the Breeze she did then more lesser type needing dev than tail end of the compet 2yos. Check how she has developed. |
