GFF on Decs but heavy rain on that day. === Pre Race === James Millman the day before the race on his blog on Rod Millman's website = "While the ground doesn’t appear as though it is going to be as soft at Salisbury on Thursday. COMPTON LANE is one of our sharpest two-year-olds but was just too green to do himself justice in a competitive contest at Ascot. That run will have brought him on and the company is much weaker so he should run pretty well although he wouldn’t want the ground too soft". === Post Race === Trainer Balding had gone away from having 5f runners and debut wins at less than 7f rare. Bohemian Flame his 2nd runner of the season and his 2nd FTO win at 5f. Both winners have made slow starts but won anyway by Deep(er) closing facilitated by soft ground (they both might have been "promising 4ths", say, on fast ground). Probably assisted by being bigger types in the context of an average or below quality race. One caveat here is what type Nibras Bounty and check why he finished 4th (AGAHI or some issue?). [May 21st VRev] Davarde going a bit free to Halfway off the Far Rail. Started hanging left after Halfway to den up Centre Track and taking much of the field with him. In a 3-way race between Davarde, Compton Lane & Spin Top ST able to hang onto Davarde & CLane ablle to get by him and possibly lead in the last 1f. CLane then moving short later on and losing ground (fading or some other issue?). But, those three looking 68-74 range (say). As with Balding's other 5f FTO win this season Bohemian Flame a bit green but looking like a plain bigger and stronger horse going past the other 3 in the last 1f and staying on well. Clear run up the inside for BF with the others hanging. Retrospective look at the info on the KVT website all looks positive and adds to the view that BF is OR80+ and needs PRev to check what his top range is. Yearling picture on KVT website showing him a strongly made one from Hillwod Stud (say compare Extortionist in the V&N article). Video from the KVT sales day shows him walking well. Hannon stable traditionally start at least one very good one at the mid-May 5f Maiden at the course. Nibras Bounty could be that one and short price favourite would add to that view. Looking just a medium one but strongly built (a stronger, better made & Hannon, version of Davarde say on VRev. Has some excuse for the poor run in that the jk chose to pull off the rail and try to make progress on the outside of Davarde. As that one started hanging left NB carried along and eventually squeezed back as Davarde reached ST & CL. Being critical you could say a real Hannon flyer would have got himself into the gap and squeezed out forward rather than chopped back. Also, nothing much happened once NB had dropped back and looking a bit green and never really gathering himself to finish the race off. But, if Hannon thought he was an 85+ one then worth giving him a chance STO to see what he can really do. Medium Size a niggle? |
