SUMMARY

> === Pre Race ===

Palmer on his BF blog = "We wanted to give Afandem a test in his next start to see where we stood with him. But he faces only four rivals in a novice at Goodwood on Thursday, though against that three of those are newcomers from leading stables, and one holds a Group 1 entry. So it could be a hot little race. Afandem crept up on us a little bit, and he was slightly under the radar before his debut, though his work had been pleasing me. Earlier in the year, he looked like being a very early sort but then he worked poorly, so we backed off him a bit and gave him more time. And he still hasn't completely come in his summer coat.But he was very impressive on his debut at Doncaster last month, and the runner-up won his maiden by seven lengths on Monday, and hopefully he can make it two from two at Goodwood.".

See PRev note about size of Afandem. Link this to the Medium-at-most but ready types like Copper Knight, even Aktabantay to some extent. Where does Gifted Master fit in that. Is Palmer buying different types at the sales with some targeted as early 2yos? These different physical types to the taller and bigger Galileo Gold for eg (and GG cost less). Why did Palmer bring Afandem to a tough race like this with a penalty when he could have gone to pretty much any Novice race? Owner want a day out at GDWD?

After an underwhelming start to the season by Hannon two better debuts on the day with Repton solid promise here (the stable always targeted GDWD a lot for starting better ones) and Breeze Buy Grizell a FTO winner at SDWN. Stable had lacked an early starting one up to Group standard and Breeze Buy Mehmas (their NWBY Coventry horse) the one standout to date/. Legendary Lunch another possible Group Profile from debut then a lesser effort STO (unless a usable slower pace at WDSR and Sea Of Snow has an engine out of line with her physique).

Yalta review

Good paddock. Afandem 2/1 on fav, the smallest and although hard fit in the Palmer style looked vulnerable to one of the big boys.

Yalta – Big in the way that some MJ 2yos are. Apparently he feeds them 4 times a day, there is a dedicated night feeder, so evening stables are not the last feed as is traditional. Great big strong individual, a bit colty but not getting upset at all. Bounced out ran professionally and won easily. Time not special but ground may have been closer to g/s than the good given. 90

Repton – Well proportioned, shading into the big category, probably a bit taller than Son Castello, deep girthed and scopey. Slightly light at the back end but made up for by overall athleticism. Troublesome in the paddock and a bit free early. Improve 88

Afandem – Very much the Palmer mould, top end of small but muscle strength and development makes him look medium. Calm and professional throughout. 80

Pleaseletmewin – easy to see why this one has been gelded, eyes on stalks and playing up. Probably the tallest in the paddock but slenderer than Yalta and Repton. Should snap together after this experience and ought to pick up a race or two. 80

Son Castello – Hmm, after liking the look of this one at Windsor and thinking he wasn’t too bad here it looks like there is a problem. Maybe attitude as his head came up and he did not seem to be enjoying things after about 2.5f. Looked fit enough to compete. Decent size and as thought at Windsor somewhere between top end of medium and bottom end of small. A bit narrow but otherwise still looks like at least a high 70’s horse but now has to prove he wants to co-operate. 77 but will want to see him put in some effort.
