Aboyne was retained cheaply at the sales and received weight from
the other colts. Settled midfield as the fillies forced the pace and came
through in the last one furlong as they stalled. Probably only had to be
the normal level of competence of trainer's debut runners and slightly
better than a low profile to win. Trainer has record of being able to prepare
poor types to win sellers that don't then progress. 11/2 4th favourite.
A positive for his first season sire whose second runner it was.
Jazz At The Sands was the highest priced yearling in the field
and from TV pictures looked bigger and with more scope than the others.
Ran slightly freely and pressing leader until past halfway before fading
away in the last one furlong plus. Typical trainer debut in terms of final
performance but with some positive points and not the 'lost' debut he often
has. Trainer has poor overall record with 2yos but watch to see how this
one performs when switched to the all-weather.
One Trick Pony was as uncompetitive as his trainer's other 4 debut
runners so far and none have shown the expected zip.
The other runners performed to their expected level within reasonable limits.
Ace Baby drifted from 7/1 which is a bad sign for his trainer on
debut who tend to know the ability of their runners prior to a race.
FUTURE RELEVANCE
A poor race and none of the runners looked likely to be capable of 70+
form. The only one of possible interest would be Jazz At The Sands because
his trainer often has moderate debut runs and he appeared to be an acceptable
type with some pace. It will be interesting to see how quickly the trainer
switches him to the all-weather.
