BRITISH 2YO RACING - 2005 Season Race Report

013: Doncaster, April 2nd : 5f (5) Maiden

RACE SUMMARY

  • A messy race with runners losing ground at the start, hanging left handed & some of the pacemakers fading and hampering runners behind. The final result was at a slightly higher level than expected in spite of the problems. The placed horses were a mix of runners who had been prominent throughout and those keeping on having been off the pace.
  • The following tables gives the ratings given to the actual race performances ('Estimate') compared to the Profile ratings assigned before the race. Boxes in green indicate a runner that over-performed in the race against the pre-race profile and in pink one that notably under-performed.

Dusty City had put in a dull run on debut in line with his trainer's runners so far in the season. This was the first sign of a better run by one of his runners at 4/1 2nd favourite.

The History Man put in the most interesting debut of the group. Noted at sales as being an acceptable type for this level of race but with the caveat that he may not be able to carry his size. He proved that is not a problem by pulling, running quite freely and showing natural pace. He did best of the front runners and was only beaten by a runner with previous experience. Drifted from 10/1 to 14/1 in a race where the trainer's other runner - Looking North - received each-way support from 25/1 to 12/1 and finished unplaced (not unusual). A good debut showing some natural ability although the sales review and trainer's methods suggest he may not rate much more highly and need to win in the next two runs.

Shaydreambeliever received some mild support from 8/1 to 7/1. First runner of the season for the trainer and had been entered for the first race of the season on March 19th and declared for an abandoned race at Redcar on March 28th. Trainer's runners are usually competent on debut but showed inexperience and never got into the race, keeping on up the stands' rail for a volunteer 3rd. Some promise in keeping on and sales review suggest he should be able to improve by 10lb at least. [Checking back on his trainer's very earliest debuts in 2002-4 they have run similar debuts and none of the three has really improved afterwards & none won]. Probably expect him to improve to sales rating of late 60s but not further.

Ooh Aah Camara hung left throughout the race but led around the furlong from home point before fading. Had looked a physical type capable of reaching 60s rating at Warwick and confirmed that is possible here.

Ryedal Ovation started 12/1 and ran a fairly typical trainer debut at least keeping on in midfield at the end of the race.

Looking North had the trainer's normal first choice jockey on and opened at 25/1. However he received some each-way support to 12/1 and shorter than the trainer's other runner (The History Man). This is not unusual for the trainer's runners and he often has two runners in a race and they often finish the 'wrong way around'. Never got into the race after a slowish start.

Dancing Edge was 6/1 third favourite but never got into the race.

Becktara opened 9/2 and finished as 7/2 favourite. Ran close to the pace for 3f+ before a poor fade to finish 8th. Trainer's later winners usually rat 50+ on debut so a slight worry with this one. The trainer has not had a strong debut from a 'natural' yet (as he had in 2003-4) and possible he doesn't have one. However his earliest debut runs can be mixed so he could be able to develop from this and possibly he is slightly behind schedule with his 2yos this year.
